George-2.0

We have 2 to vote for this time out. And 4 days to make your choice.

Edward J Grug III

I can't even imagine having a favourite child star so I voted for favourite rock and roll movie, but my list will be:

1. The Phantom of the Paradise
2. ?
FINE

The Lurker

Do the two Guardians films count as Rock N Roll movies?

In all the movies you've seen you can't think of any child performers that have done a great job?

Coming up with 25 might be a bit of a stretch for me but the top 10 should be easy.

But I guess "star" could also mean music and other things besides movies, so it would depend on the rules for the list.

I voted for Rock Movies as I could easily fill out a list there, from musicals and bios - maybe even docs (Beatles Anthology) but if documentaries aren't allowed, that's okay, I could still whip something up.

But I think I could fill out a list of child stars too if that was chosen.

Like Edward, I don't know that I've had a fave - in that, I'd search out and watch all their movies as I do with a Brando or Blanchett (my sister used to love watching Shirley Temple movies, so she had a favorite). Still, there are plenty of great performances from young people that I've enjoyed. Patty Duke in the Miracle Worker, Patty McCormack in The Bad Seed, Mary Badham in To Kill a Mockingbird, and that kid who saw dead people... Jodie Foster started acting when she was young, she could be considered, and I could always fill it out the list with Little Rascals (aka Our Gang) if I came up short.

Hell, I've seen a handful of Bruce Lee movies when he was a kid (and he was a pretty good actor too, so I guess he can be my favorite child star, HaHa).

It also depends on the cutoff age, will it include pre-teen years?

Did you not see the True Grit remake?  Hailee Steinfeld was easily the best thing about that movie.

I doubt I could name 25 rock and roll movies, much less 25 that I've actually seen. Child actors OTOH would be relatively easy, so I went with that.

I don't know what to tell you. I have so little of an opinion on it, I think I'd do better with a list of favourite doorstops.

All I know (should we chose that topic) is that the parade of Japanese children in tiny upsetting shorts from Prince of Space and Invasion of the Neptune Men are shoo-ins. We like them very much!

I cant tell which LoC I would prefer because I have no idea what the rules for either list are.

For example, VH1 has argued that Top Gun and Beverly Hills Cop are both Rock and Roll movies because of their soundtrack albums. Although, I think the real reason they made that argument was that at the time they had the broadcast rights to the Paramount film library, which were the only films they could air on the Rock N Roll Picture Show, so wanted an excuse to air them. But would a Rock and Roll movie have to be in musical form, such as Grease, have rock stars that don't sing outside of the opening credit track as in Twist of Fate, or a movie where the stars don't sing at all, but there is an overall rock and roll soundtrack like Footloose. Would documentaries, mockumentaries and concert films count? And just Rock & Roll, or can the category include Disco, Soul, Country, Folk Music, and various forms of pop music?

As for child stars. wat is the cut off age date? I can think of a lot of teenage stars I like. Do they have to be child stars this year or can I include someone like the Olsen Twins who are currently adults. What about stars like Bruce Lee and Jason Bateman who had their biggest success as adults but began as child actors?  How about adult stars that play kids like Mary Pickford and Pee Wee Herman?

Child stars make a stunning comeback.

That's your topic for LoC #130, rules thread should be coming soon.

F-Zero

Thank you sir.  On it.  Tonight or tomorrow.  Will consider rule suggestions anyone has.

Rule suggestions? We voters need to know what's a kid, so you have to establish an age group. But here are a few thoughts to help.

Childhood period takes you to age 7 and narrows your window.
Middle Childhood 7 to puberty, which is 12 or 13, so that expands the age pool we can choose from
Adolescence is where you make that move into adulthood, that's age 13 to 19.

Wikipedia states that biologically a child is a human being between the stages of birth and puberty. It goes on... "Adolescence is accepted by some cultures as a part of social childhood, because most adolescents are considered minors under the law."

Also, of course, performers grow up, your asking forum members then to list a star according to their work during a specific age bracket.

Hailee Steinfeld is now in her 20s and is still active, but she was 10 when she started acting, 13 when cast in the role of Mattie Ross in True Grit. Jerry Mathers was 6 when he started acting, 9 when he started playing Beaver Cleaver, 15 when the show ended (and he was no longer a kid, we saw him as a young teen).

So maybe 0 to 13 or 14? 14 is right on that line. 15-16 pushes that line, 19 is the absolute line, after that your an adult.

What was your thinking on the age bracket? How old is too old?

* While I'll likely stick with actors, we'd also need to know who else might be eligible. Movies, music, sports (Nadia Comaneci was 14 when she won Olympic gold), radio and nightclub work (Rose Marie of Dick Van Dyke fame started off this way, as Baby Rose Marie).

* I wouldn't include adults who play kids, make it true kids, since we are voting for stars -actual performers, not characters.

Hope that helps and doesn't muddy up the waters

Pak-Man

I like that age range, but I'd give some wiggle-room to teens and tweens playing younger children. I'd also point out that Child Actors obviously don't stay Child Actors, so if you were voting for Drew Barrymore, for instance, you'd be voting for her in ET and other contemporary movies and not for her in, say Charlie's Angels.
