PotC: Dead Man's Chest was terrible

I just watched Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, and wow, what a turd.  The action isn't so much non-stop, as it is incessant.  I mean, slow down and tell the audience what the hell is going on once in awhile.  The entire thing was nonsensical, and at almost 2 1/2 hours, I lost all patience...it just wouldn't end!  Depp was good again, of course, but I wasn't even remotely charmed by him this time around.

Since I'm not a movie critic, here's an excerpt from Lisa Schwarzbaum's review, who basically echo's my thoughts:

QuoteYes indeed, Pirates 2.0 is a theme ride, if by ride you mean a hellish contraption into which a ticket holder is strapped, overstimulated but unsatisfied, and unable to disengage until the operator releases the restraining harness.

But, see, this is where the cheat between sensation and satisfaction comes in, a substitution only likely to become more commonplace as the Pirates franchise becomes the very model of modern studio brand extension. Without character, where's the consequence? Without consequence, where's the joy? Without an artistic stake in eliciting joy (or sadness, or concern, or something other than a glazed giggle at Depp's finery), there's nothing to keep producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Gore Verbinski, and their screenwriting galleymates from piling on another big false ending, and another, and another, Caribbean without end, until a pummeled audience begs for a toilet break and, for mercy's sake, a real conclusion...Dead Man's Chest cranks for what feels like an infernal eternity.

if someone agrees with your opinion then it must be true.

I liked it a lot except for the lame love triangle.

I don't know who shoved grumpy up your ass, but I'm not saying my opinion is right, and yours is wrong.  I'm just not as eloquent as someone who writes for a living, so I thought I'd put it out there.

jack im sorry but i totally agree.  I thought the whole thing was fun and enjoyable.  Including the love triangle.  I also REALLY REALLY liked Davy Jones, which is odd because i went into the theater expecting to hate it and especially him.

Love triangle was lame, but the worst part was the ending. Pirates 2 reminds me of the Matrix sequels... better just to pretend it doesn't exist.

ScottotD

I thought the ending had a vaguely Empire-vibe.

I liked it, although upon repeat viewings, I've noticed the tendancy for the movie to reference the first movie about...oh, every ten minutes or so.  Other than that, I did like it.  And I liked the love triangle.  Can't wait for part 3.

sarcasm_made_Easy

ever since the original star wars its like hollywood is trying to repeat the formula.

cool stand alone movie

sequal with cliff hanger, preferably a possible death

the wrap up with orgy of destruction.

neato.

ps its still a better movie if youve ridden the ride as much as me.

POTC: DMC has 'Sequel-its'.  The directory decided to make everything bigger and faster than the first movie.  A mistake in my opinion.  Though there were many things I liked, Davy Jones and his crew were pretty awesome.  It was silly, more illogical and had too many set pieces.

Unlike the first movie, which continues to be good on rewatches, the second is more tiresome with every viewing.

Oh, and what happened to Kiera Knightly's bust in the second movie?   I want the hotness from the first movie back.  Oh, and no more dressing here like a boy.  It's too androgynous for me.

You obviously didn't see the film in a high-quality theater/home theater. It's such a visceral experience that it helps to see it with great video and killer surround sound. The bass slam that happens every time they summon the Kraken is outstanding!!

It's like Phantom Menace: if you're thrown back in your chair by the impact of the speakers, it makes it much better.
(however, please do not misconstrue that statement to read that I thought Phantom Menace was as good as Dead Man's Chest. It's NOT!! Phantom still sux big time.  ;))

Oh man, I LOVE the Pirates movies. I even liked the second as much if not more than the first!!

Not saying you don't having valid points, though - Smiles.

I entirely understand why some people don't like the movie -- I just disagree with em!

Actually, I have a 52" DLP with 6.1 surround, so I did see it in a pretty good home theater.  But good special effects and sound design does not a good movie make.

(sorry, trying to sound like Yoda, and failing  :P )

I can see why some people might enjoy the visceral experience, but I was very underwhelmed by the whole thing.

I liked Dead Man's Chest just fine..except for the fact it really should have had about 30 minutes trimmed from it.
