I have a feeling the riffs are so much louder because Kino weighted it like they would a traditional audio commentary. There, hearing the film itself is much more secondary to hearing the thoughts of the person doing the commentary. But since riffs interact with the film's audio, they need to be on an even level.

That is why I could never get into the riff of "The Heat" with Joel and the other guys. It was too much like a traditional commentary track.
