I will be going to the Tuesday encore.  Until then, and I hope this doesn't open up a can of spoiler worms... but what is the deal with the word "Orhpan"?  It is used in Len Peralta's artwork depicting Dragon Sound band members, in one case specifically "shirtless music taekwondo orhpans".  Is there a typo on screen or is the word oddly mispronounced at some point in the movie?

Yeah I was in Tenn on business so had nothing to do last night so I searched local events and this came up and I was like "Word?" I'd heard nothing about it. Really glad I found out in time because it was awesome.

Maybe the new-ness has worn off? 3 years ago I'd have damn sure known about this weeks in advance. I wonder if that's a reason for the smaller crowds?

As a (mostly) lurker, maybe my scale/proportion is off, but I consider you one of the more rabid Rifftrax fans.  Do you Twitter?  Following @rifftrax you would have been inundated with upcoming live events.  Assuming you're a member of the main (merchant) site they should be sending you a few emails for each specific event along with a "pre season" roundup in various media formats of what is in store for the year of live riffs.  I've never missed early notice of a live event and I'm neither overly techy or rabid in comparison to the prolific posters here.

The creator of the movie, Tae Kwon Kim (or whatever it is, can't be bothered to look it up right now.) is Japanese-American with a very heavy accent that sort of makes his Enlgish speaking..... muddy. So I suspect i'ts a play on his pronunciation of the word.

Along those lines, there's a humorous point in the movie where the black-guy gets a letter from someone saying attempts to find his biological father have failed again and as he kind of mopes about it, the other guys sort-of criticize him on "not being an [orphan] like the rest of them.  Which... Huh?!  Just because he's an orphan -wasn't raised by his biological parents- doesn't mean he doesn't have an actual set of parents out there somewhere!

On the movie itself:    Spoilers.... like it matters.

In the "climatic" battle near the end of the movie the black-guy is severely injured and taken to the hospital. (They were ambushed on their way to meet his biological father, whom he finally found.) Waiting outside his recovery room are his friends and his "father."   The father is played by a young black-man in "old-age makeup" (that's to say they used temporary hair coloring to make his hair and mustache look gray, gave him glasses and and a lump "old man suit."  At first I thought they just used the "kid" and dressed him like his "father" to play on the similar looks between the two.   But at the very end of the movie  we see the father and the son walking alongside one another (well, the son in a wheelchair.)

So, did they get another young black man to play the father? Would it have been so hard to find an older black man for the part? Or did the director/producer go crazy and do some split-screen stuff? (Because no split-screen technique was showing which would be remarkable for this level of production.)

And did Pat Benatar-looking singer chick get her hair permed and un-permed between their gigs and her going to school?! (Production wise one set of scenes would have been shot with the perm, the perm removed, and then the flatened hair scenes shot, I'm talking in the context of the movie.)

Thanks for the info, that was my second guess.  I'll read your "like spoilers matter for this movie" after seeing it.  For me, #allspoilersmatter

Loved every second of the riff, though Dragon Sound's songs will haunt me forever.

Speaking of which, if someone with more time and better video editing software than me isn't currently cutting together a My Little Pony video with plenty of Rainbow Dash and Applejack to sync up with that Friends Forever song, than what the hell are you doing? That video needs to be made.

(Checks the anthologies) Nope. No one seems to have used it yet.

However, I'll note that last year Ubisoft released a stand alone expansion for Far Cry 3 called Blood Dragon, a cheesy love note to bad 80s movies. Like, say, Megaforce. "Friends" is used as the music for the end credits in the game.

Waiting for the encore to start. Test footage was Miami Sound Machine. Seems appropriate...

MartyS (Gromit)

Made it to the encore tonight a few minutes late, maybe a minute into Measuring Man.

Hilarious short, and I was in tears several times during the movie, fantastically bad movie and a great riff.

We got nothing before it started. No slides, nothing.  I really wish RiffTrax would post them up somewhere or include them with the VODs.

Just got back from the encore showing, still funny, funny, stuff and can't wait for the VOD.  And, know what, I have to grudgingly admit the movie isn't that bad.  I mean, it's horribly acted, it's horribly filmed, the fight choreography is terrible, the sound mixing is abysmal but other than that...

But, can someone help me with what I think is narrative flaw in the movie?  And excuse my explanation of it, I'm not sure what specific nationality these characters are so I'm just going to go with "Asian."

So, as far as I can tell there's two main "Asian" characters in the movie.  There's the White Ninja guy and Y.K. Kim, the "leader" of our Dragon Sound alt-progressive-taekwondo rock group.

The White Ninja guy reveals himself early in the movie, when they bring him the drugs and money stolen in the opening action sequence.  Now I thought he was the guy we saw hanging out with Discount Chuck Norris, who was in the compound and later with the motorcycle gang with the kitschy scarfs.   Apparently he... was... killed? In the abandoned industrial compound when Dragon Sound was rescuing Poor Man's John Oates?  Because in a following scene we see the news delivered to White Ninja as "his brother being killed."

Now, the "brother" cannot be Discount Chuck Norris because Discount Chuck Norris's sister is Discount Pat Benatar and Kitschy Scarf Guy points out DPB in an early scene and says, "Isn't that your sister?"  Why would he point her out and ask this if she was *his* sister too?  After WN is informed "his brother" died he flashback to a scene with DCN and KSG talking.

So, were WN and KSG brothers?  Did I miss KSG guy getting killed? Were they both played by the same actor and just never shared a scene?  Or was there only WN/KSG and then DCN and KSG guy just forgot DPB was his sister too?  Or where they only "brothers" in terms of their criminal organization or in friendship terms and not either biologically or familiarly.

And I'm still not clear on why "Dad" was played by a young black man in a very poor attempt at "old-man makeup."  Could they really not get an older black man to play the father? I mean, they had a picture of "the father" and to have that they'd have to have that man's permission in order to use it on camera.  Couldn't they put talc-powder in his hair and given him oversized glasses and play an older version of himself?  Why did they get a young black actor put in poor old-age makeup to play the father?  I mean, that's high school play levels of production.

I still don't get how DPB took her hair in and out of perms between gigs.

Or why the "evil gym" was lit like the inside of a roller rink.  Or why YKK felt the need to stuff grapes in people's mouths. Why not offer them to people and let THEM take the grapes and put them in their mouths? Or just place them there, why palm the grapes and shove them in there!

And why the flash of misty spit when doing the practice moves?

What was the importance of the guy who ran the diner? What did he mean to everyone in all of this?!

Discount David Schwimmer during the final battle gets slashed pretty good across the back, we even see the gash, see him react, and then see him take off his shirt.  But then later his back is fine (he's able to continue fighting, drive to the hospital, and when we see his back again there's no gash on it) and he doesn't need hospital treatment.

Soooo...... These guys just got away with the multiple homicides that left behind multiple bodies spread out across the industrial complex (twice, in fact) and this park. I mean, we're talking possibly dozens of deaths or serious injuries, hell there'd be questions asked at the hospital over the black guy's wounds and the doctors and surgeons would tell it was a wound from a sword or other large cutting implement; which they'd be required to report to the police since it'd be clear evidence of a crime and not a normal accident.  The police would certainly connect the guy was the massive sword gash with the multiple stabbed and slashed bodies in the park.

Fine, I'll hand-wave that the black-guy's chest wound wasn't that severe. I'll accept his rib cage and sternum protected his internal organs.  Still, he has a major gash across his chest and would have suffered major blood loss. Even if he was able to be stitched back-up and given a major blood transfusion all without any complications in order to make a full recovery inside of a day or two, he wouldn't be released right away; he'd be kept a couple of days for observation! (Well, unless the health insurance Dragon Sound carries is an HMO.)

....

Yeah, I think that about covers the questions and thoughts I have on the movie at this point.

MartyS (Gromit)

I was confused by the "brother" line also.

I wonder if it's due to the same reason for bad continuity in the hair, they shot all the scenes at each location on what ever day they were there, and forgot to remember what people looked like when they went to another location.  If the scenes in that place where the ninjas were all sitting were all shot first, they may have forgotten about the "brother" line, I'm not so sure this movie had a script.  ;D   The flashback stills seem to have been tacked on to make sense of the brother line, forgetting that Pat Benatar Wannabe only talks about beard guy when talking about who in her family is still around.

And wow, the shoving of the grapes into people's mouths, classic storytelling right there.  Such an important and pivotal scene.

SJP

I thirdly was confused by the brother line.  I think they were just very close, or something ended up on the cutting room floor.  Coincidentally, this is the second movie I've seen in the past week where somebody is revealed to be a 'brother' in the third act of the movie for no good reason whatsoever.

Also, as for the ending (not spoilered...if you missed the encore, you're probably not on this board anyway...ok, maybe mild spoiler alert...)

I don't know if anyone has looked this up yet (it's not hard trivia to find), but Jim in the hospital is a reshoot.  He was supposed to die at the end of the movie, but a test audience (yes, a test audience...I'm as amazed as you are) didn't like that and the ending was changed last minute.  You might notice there is a huge drop in picture quality at the end of the movie, because I'm guessing they picked up lesser film stock to do the scene quickly.  I'm guessing the Dad was a member of the crew so they didn't have to hire too many actors on short notice.  The doctor probably already cost them $5 and a pizza as it was.

Still, I will say that while this may not be the absolute FUNNIEST Rifftrax I've seen recently (Anaconda was still probably my favorite, even if we never get a Live version for purchase), it may very well be the best written I've seen.  The movie was certainly dumb enough to lend itself to riff without much effort, but it felt like they put more effort in than I've seen lately.  The variety just seemed better as a whole.
One Man Band Riffs.  18 riffs, over 600 served, since 2009.

That was a fun show. Bummed that we didn't get the slides before the show though.

Whoa! They G.I. Joe: The Movie'd it!

The slides weren't as hilarious as usual, this time. Maybe I just wasn't quite in the mood. The best one promised a performance before the show from the guitarist from Rollergator. :^)

Incidentally, I had luck once letting a theater employee know that there was supposed to be a pre-show and it wasn't showing.

Trekker4747

I liked during the Ice Cream Bunny preview they're ranting about the cheap look/aspects of the movie and then it cuts to the inside of the home with a pretty young woman is there doing something and Kevin stops in the middle of his rant and goes something like, "Oh! Hello!"  And then the others sort-of admonish him due to the age disparity between him and the young woman.   :D
