Jim Irsay had $29K during stop

Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- Colts owner Jim Irsay had $29,000 in cash and bottles of prescription drugs in his vehicle when he was arrested this month on suspicion of intoxicated driving, according to a police arrest report.

The cash was contained in Irsay's briefcase, wallet and two laundry bags, the report said. The report said that bottles containing pills of various colors were stored in the metal briefcase and in bags on the floor of the passenger side.

Irsay denied being drunk when he was arrested in suburban Carmel on March 16, although the 54-year-old billionaire was so disoriented that officers had him sit on the hood of a patrol car to keep him from falling, the report said. The arresting officer said he "believed Irsay to be intoxicated on a substance other than alcohol," according to the report.

Hamilton County Sheriff's Office Jim Irsay admitted taking multiple medications but refused to submit to a blood test and had $29,029 in cash on him when he was stopped on suspicion of DWI earlier this month, according to police reports.

The arrest report listed a dozen pieces of evidence identified as prescription drugs but did not describe them. Irsay told police he'd taken several prescription medications that day.

The contents of the arrest report by Carmel police were first reported Thursday by The Indianapolis Star, which obtained the report through a public records request.

Irsay's attorney, James Voyles, and spokeswoman Myra Borshoff Cook didn't immediately return messages from The Associated Press seeking comment Thursday.

The report said an officer pulled over Irsay's slow-moving SUV after it stopped twice on a city street for no apparent reason and failed to use a turn signal. Police said Irsay told the officer that he sometimes has trouble finding his home. The Star reported that Irsay had bought a home in late February less than a half-mile from where he was stopped.

"I observed the vehicle come to a complete stop on W. Main Street for no apparent reason," the officer wrote in the report. "As I was approaching the vehicle it began to slowly move eastbound and came to another complete stop in the lane of travel for no apparent reason. ... I asked him if he knew why I had pulled him over. Irsay advised that he was trying to find his house and gets confused with what road it is located on."

Earlier this week, prosecutors postponed an initial court appearance for Irsay "unless or until" formal charges are filed against him. Irsay was booked on preliminary charges of misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and four felony counts of possession of a controlled substance. But Hamilton County chief deputy prosecutor Andre Miksha said prosecutors are not bound by preliminary booking charges.

Irsay's family said after his arrest that he is undergoing treatment "to help him meet his challenges head-on" at a facility outside of Indiana. They have not identified the facility.

Irsay acknowledged in 2002 that he had become dependent on painkillers after several orthopedic operations but said he'd overcome the problem after undergoing treatment.

The report said Irsay failed field sobriety tests and refused a blood draw. A judge approved a search warrant to draw his blood, but those results have not been released. Refusing the blood test means Irsay's driver's license will be automatically suspended for one year.

Irsay declined to answer questions without his attorney present and was not questioned at the jail. He was released the following day.

Hmmmm, I am sure there was nothing wrong with him that night.

Nope, not a thing.

He probably was also wondering where Manning went.

Could 'The Donald' save our Bills?? :o

All hail Donald? Trump approached to buy Buffalo Bills

2:46p ET

Will we see Donald Trump in the NFL?

Here comes The Donald?

Donald Trump, the well-known businessman, told a Buffalo radio station that he's been approached by a group of people looking to buy the Buffalo Bills in the wake of owner Ralph Wilson's death. Trump, in case you didn't know, is close friends with Hall of Famer and Bills legend Jim Kelly.

Don't worry. Trump wouldn't look to move the team out of Buffalo.

"I know so many people in Buffalo," Trump told WBEN Radio. "I certainly would look at it but I would ... if it were me I'd keep the team in Buffalo.

"I think it's something that is really vital to the area. ... It would be catastrophic, in my opinion, if Buffalo loses the Buffalo Bills."

Well, that's a relief. And of course, it's way too soon to just assume Trump will end up as the team's owner. There are far too many steps that must be navigated before that can happen. But Trump does have a history in the business of football, as he bought the USFL's New Jersey Generals back in 1983.

So, there is a chance we'll see that world-famous combover on an NFL sideline. Stranger things have happened.

KidFlash

I legitimately doubt it. He's considered the main reason the USFL went under (not necessarily, but perception is reality), and likes doing things just to get his name out into the public.

More realistic, I think, are the chances of Sabres owner Terry Pegula getting involved. Jason LaCanfora of CBS had a story last week that he was going to be part of the sale process.

QuoteBuffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula could be the white knight who keeps the team planted as is. He has a very strong bond and ties to the area and his name was making the rounds among other owners during these meetings as someone who is expected to be a part of this process. Pegula is a multi-billionaire who has found riches in both the natural gas and real estate industries. His stock is rising given that his net worth has escalated in the past year, based primarily on his natural gas company.

If you're unfamiliar with Pegula, he's loaded, loves the area and is building things in downtown Buffalo that would help the city (along with the Sabres). NFL rules prohibit someone who owns another team in another city in another league to be majority owner (conflict of interest), which means Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs wouldn't be able to be majority owner. But he could buy a stake and be totally above board.

RVR II

Well who ever decides to buy the team, I Hope they keep'em in Buffalo ;D

KidFlash

Me too, man.

I think the team going to LA would be kind of ridiculous, as LaCanfora notes that both the Rams and Raiders' leases expire this year. Plus the Rams owner just bought land in LA. So the Bills in LA isn't happening, not with the six years of lease tying the team to the area and more attractive options in California (the Chargers are always brought up as well).

Toronto is a whole different story, of course. We'll see.

Bob

The rams owner makes his money buying-selling land.  It had zero to do with moving a team.   Zero chance of them moving back there.

Bob

I wonder if LA will ever get a team?    Many rich owners have used "LA might take us" in negotiating with with current cities on great stadium deals.

LA is like a poker bluff at the table.

The 3 day nfl draft is 5 weeks away.  I cannot wait

RVR II

Looks like you might be getting our local boy, Jadaveon Clowney..
He's a beast so long as he doesn't get caught all the time by police for speeding :-X

All depends if the powers that be in LA can ever agree on a stadium site. When that happens, a team will probably go. They may play at the Coliseum for a year or two, then move into new digs.

But then, I'm on the other side of the country, so I'm not sure if that's even a realistic option anymore. We're getting on 20 years without LA having a team... would there be interest if it wasn't the Raiders, Chargers or an expansion team?

Ortega

In the next few years we might see an expansion team.  Its been over 10 years since the Texans entered the league, and over 15 since that whole Cleveland expansion/reactivation nonsense.  L.A. has the market to support two teams, with possibly San Antonio as the possible other team.  Barring expansion, the only teams i see as having a realistic chance at moving to L.A. is either the Raiders or the Chargers.  Qualcomm stadium is showing it age, and we all know how deplorable the O.co Coliseum is.  Though with the Chargers, there have been negotiations with SD about funding a new stadium, with terms that aren't bad for both sides.  With the Raiders, it a bit complicated.  With the whole bad blood between Al Davis and the rest of the league, it seems that they won't allow the Raiders to move while Mark Davis till owns them.  Its a shame because whatever problems Al Davis caused, it all in the past.  Davis is dead, Pete Rozell is dead, and Tagliabue is long gone.  It seems like the majority of the owners who knew Al Davis want to continue their pettiness.  Which is a shame because that means that we have to watch the Raiders play on that travesty of a field during the beginning of the season, with seeing the dirt near the midfield.

Mark Cuban: Trump Can't Afford Buffalo Bills Alone
Donald Fires Back HARD
4/5/2014 12:55 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

Mark Cuban tells TMZ Sports he does NOT believe Donald Trump can afford to purchase the Buffalo Bills all by himself ... a statement that Trump says is DEAD WRONG.

Trump also says Cuban's a "lightweight whose net worth is a fraction of mine" ... and claims he has first-hand knowledge that Mark sucks at golf.
Here's how it all began ... we reached out to Mark (who owns the NBA's Dallas Mavericks) to get his thoughts about Trump's interest in buying the Bills.

His response: "He cant afford them by himself. So it would be interesting to see what group he put together to buy them. It would make things interesting."

Donald, to put it lightly, disagreed ... and fired back hard at the insinuation his bank account couldn't handle the purchase.

"Mark Cuban is a lightweight whose net worth is a fraction of mine. He was rejected by baseball and probably plenty of others! By the way, I watched him play golf and he is a total non-athlete – zero clubhead speed. He lives vicariously through his basketball players."

Trump added, "By the way, the Dallas Mavericks deal is syndicated and his partners have been fighting him over poor management. While the Bills deal would be easily handled by me, if I chose to do it, almost all sports deals are syndicated."

Sounds like fightin' words to us.

Bob

Those two idiots should be sent to Mars and forgotten about.  Why are they quoted on anything?   At least when you see their name in an article, you can stop reading.  When on TV, you grab the remote.
