Deflategate debunker: Bill Nye picks apart Belichick's defense

FOX Sports

Bill Nye isn't impressed with Bill Belichick's science lesson.

Bill Belichick went all Bill Nye the Science Guy as he tried to explain how the balls used by the New England Patriots in last week's championship game might have become deflated by the time the game started.

It was definitely a strange scene.

His explanation sure sounded scientific. Here's part of it: "Now we all know that air pressure is a function of the atmospheric conditions. It's a function of that. So if there's activity in the ball relative to the rubbing process, I think that explains why, when we gave them to the officials, and the officials put it at, let's say 12.5 (PSI), that once the ball reached its equilibrium state it was closer to 11.5."

Well, Sunday morning, the real Science Guy decided it was time to weigh in. And let's just say Bill Nye isn't buying the other Bill's hypothesis.

"What he said didn't make any sense," said Nye during an interview on Good Morning America. "Rubbing the football, I don't think you can change the pressure.

"To really change the pressure, you need one of these," he added, holding up an inflation needle.
Good ol Belicheat ::)

Rams switch to year-to-year lease, can leave in 2016

Rams owner Stan Kroenke is growing less popular by the day in St. Louis. (USATSI) Rams owner Stan Kroenke is growing less popular by the day in St. Louis. (USATSI)

The Rams notified St. Louis regional officials they're converting their 30-year lease, which was set to expire in 2025, to a year-to-year tenancy, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The move means the team will play at the Edward Jones Dome next season but is free to leave after March 31, 2016.

Rams owner Stan Kroenke is planning a domed, 80,000-seat stadium on the site of a defunct horse track in Inglewood, Calif. Monday, project organizers submitted a petition with 20,000-plus signatures to get the plan before voters in Inglewood, reports the Associated Press.

A task force appointed by Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon countered with a proposal for a 64,000-seat, open-air stadium north of downtown St. Louis. NFL officials have said they're working on a viable plan for St. Louis, per the Post-Dispatch.

Late Monday, the governor's task force released this statement, obtained by CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora:

"The Rams told us today of their decision to engage in an annual one-year lease with the [Convention & Visitors Bureau], as well as their submission of petition signatures for the ballot initiative in Inglewood. We appreciate the Rams personally informing us of their decision here in St. Louis as well as their filing in Inglewood. Neither of these actions was unexpected, nor do they have any effect on our stadium plans for the north riverfront of St. Louis."

For Kroenke to move the Rams to the Los Angeles area, he must get approval from 24 of the league's 32 teams.

49ers expected to hire Geep Chryst as O-coordinator

New San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Tomsula does not have an offensive background, so we've been very curious to see who he taps as offensive coordinator. On Wednesday, we found out.

NFL Media's Albert Breer reports that Geep Chryst is expected to take over the job, according to one Niners source and one apprised of the process. Chryst, like Tomsula, is taking a big jump from position coach. Chryst has been the team's quarterbacks coach for the last four years.

It has taken Tomsula a while to name his coordinator, which leads to the feeling that Chryst was not the team's first choice. Former Cleveland Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski wound up staying in Indianapolis after receiving interest from the 49ers. Lane Kiffin was also reportedly a candidate. The 49ers are hiring Eric Mangini as their defensive coordinator.

Chryst had a long history with Jim Harbaugh, and was involved in play-calling for the 49ers' red-zone attack, including Vernon Davis' famous game-winner over the Saints in 2012.

On one hand, the 49ers' choice of Chryst should be encouraging for fans. The team has changed coaching staffs without losing continuity. Then again, doesn't it feel like Colin Kaepernick needs another voice in his ear? His lack of progress in 2014 was one of the biggest problems on the 49ers team.

Jim Tomsula's staff will have a lot of crossover with Harbaugh's staff, with Tomsula, Chryst, and Mangini replacing Harbaugh, Greg Roman and Vic Fangio. This entire upcoming season feels like a test of the 49ers' theory that their coaching leaders last season weren't truly that necessary.
