On Vizio it's 'stretch' and fills the screen.

Does that make 4:3 shows fill the screen? (I hate that, everything looks wrong)  Or is it another case of bad wording?

Henry88

is there any info about the OLED's?

Wow, I'm a technical person at work and it is clear you guys know a heck a lot more about TV settings then I've ever heard of before.    Good to see and I appreciate it.

Bob

Consumer Reports says OLEDs are a few years away from being the next way to go.

MartyS (Gromit)

Yeah, right now big OLED screens are over $10k, so it will be a while before they become affordable.

I've seen them put on flexible backing, it would be wild to get a huge TV delivered rolled up in a cardboard tube, then unroll and stick it to any wall.  Someone will probably make one in 10 years or so.

Ah, Cinema Smooth....

Looks like the Samsung people say it is good to have it on (see below) and smart folks on this forum say it is better off.  I just have a feeling that I will not notice it!  Seems like it is something that tries to fit everything to blu-ray look.

"Movies are shot at 24 fps (frames per second) - Cinema Smooth is a refined playback process of movies that accurately converts and displays content originally shot on film at 24 fps as compared to the 30 fps of DVD and Blu-ray disc. This allows for smooth motion scenes when watching sources shot at the standard movie rate of 24 fps. With Wide Color Enhancer Plus, you see the picture color the way the director originally intended, brought to life on your screen with exceptional vibrancy."

Ah, Cinema Smooth....

Of course Samsung would say it was great, it's another "thing" they can claim is better than the other companies "things".

In order to smooth out the 24fps so it looks like it was shot on video they do some digital processing to create intermediate frames, that's why it looks like CGI.

But it's all personal taste, some people prefer movies to look that way.  I couldn't stand it, thought buying the TV was a big mistake until I found out how to turn it all off.  Blu-Ray is supposed to preserve the original look of a film, that's what I was looking forward to when I got the big 1080p screen.  I double dipped on the Patton Blu-Ray when they did the new HD transfer because I couldn't stand the first release that had too much noise reduction applied.

So, when can I fly you to Houston to set my TV up?   I will offer cigars and mixed drinks.......

Why would you ever want something shot at 24 fps to look digital?  I work in film so that question seems silly to me. But if you don't work in film you won't have any idea what that means and the TV company can woo you with fancy made up words. I'm just always impressed how much time TV companies spend developing technology that makes movies look crappy.

Bob

I see me on Monday setting this option OFF......

Bob

Okay, the new 60 inch TV was delivered as expected and it does look quite great!

I went through and changed all my settings on the picture settings and calibrations listed from the "plasmatvbuyingguide" set and that was pretty easy.  The settings were for having it in the "movie" picture node and not ones like the "dynamic" (which made everything brighter colored) or the others.  So I guess that is way to keep it?

And darned if I could see where the "Cinema Smoothing" option was to turn that off.

Adding the appleTV3, DVD, X-BOX and DirecTV took like 2 minutes, so that was nice.

Any other plasma suggestions you technical folks have (like where is the Cinema Smoothing), they will be appreciated and followed.

And yes, there is a lot of empty space on the shelves and, like a German, I am using my beer buckets to hold the guides and the DVD glasses.

Hook up a dedicated computer and make it a 60 inch monitor! 8)

Bob

I will NEVER made it a computer.  Computers stay in the office!

MartyS (Gromit)

 Looks good!  Have fun!

Instead of "cinema smooth" look for "dejudder", that was listed in the PDF manual I searched but maybe your set doesn't have that either.

I've thought about hooking a computer up to mine, but only because it would be nice to use the riffplayer software on a big screen.

Bob

I looked and did not see either Cinema or the Dejudder on the screen set up buttons at all.  Did not see it in the  (very small instruction book either) screen, so maybe time to search on the internet for it.

Did not see the "Color Tone" option to change it WARM2 either, so I will have to play on the internet.

Still, very happy.
