But they were all standing there in the last scene. What's that mean?

It means in California, that the police dont really look that hard for people in cars that blow up, they assume they dissolved into fairy dust and it is okay to give out medals to cops who claim  "um, like the car blew up, a trucker was horrible injured and the victim..... that only I saw..... disolved into thin air.   Uh, yeah, that is what happened."

Has anyone checked it closely enough to see if the doll that the girl was throwing out of the car is the same doll that he finds in the cistern much later?  Was it back in the car when things blew up or was Cage still holding it?    "How'd it get burned?" indeed!   Oh, shit.  I think I've just talked myself into watching it again.   Not that I expect that to make any more sense if it is the same doll.

Don't worry I checked, and it was NOT the same doll. Which makes Nic Cage's reaction even less sense. I mean really, it would have been at least somewhat suspensful if it was the same doll from the beginning.

Also, who in their right minds would orchestrate a fake death like that? One that involves the use of a big rig and possibly the deaths of the people that intended to fake it? They must have REALLY needed that scarifice, a truck like that isn't cheap. The car literally blew up with the passengers in it, if they got out with no burns it would be a miracle. Oh wait, they used their wiccan powers.

Just like the movie Speed! They found a bit of thumb and assumed Dennis Hopper was completely gone!

There is so much that made no practical sense whatsoever, namely the fact that they let him run around the Island for several days when they could have just locked him up....

Yeah, that's what really gets me.  They concoct this ridiculous plan with endless opportunities to blow up in their faces when all they had to do was throw his ass in jail the minute he showed up.   Maybe they were freebasing honey when they came up with it.

Ebert always says that an audience will accept the impossible before the improbable.

well i dont see how he could do any harm wandering around.  what was he gonna do?  swim home through freezing northpacific water?  they killed the only way off the island, the plane.  Of all the problems i have with this movies, and beleive me there are quite a few.  that isnt one of them.  I think they probably thought it was more amusing to let him think he was gonna find something.

Oh, that's why they killed the pilot--I didn't get that either. But clearly Cage wasn't going to try to escape with the pilot because he was so committed to finding Rowan, so the pilot thing was maybe a bit rash. Where do they think they're going to get their Pepperidge Farm shipments from then on, as well as whatever else the pilot was bringing them, which I can only assume was dvds and ipods and stuff, because otherwise, why did everyone on this super secluded island all talk exactly like mainstream Americans--like Leelee saying "that's so cool," at the end. Why don't they talk all weird and 17th century? And how does the Anne Heche lady know how to drive?? They have driving school on the island? And where did they get the car and the truck? And who's driving the truck????  And they really used some sort of magic spell to survive the car explosion unscathed?? Sorry--rhetorical questions, I don't expect there to be good answers!

Let's go down the list of what would have to happen for the evil bee women's plans to work.

1. Willow would have to be sent out ot have a relationship with Cage, then leave him (and would you trust Willow to even remember her own name?)

2. They would have to hope that Cage would be the one to find the doll on the side of the road, and care enough to pick it up and give it back.

3.  They would have to have a car crash without killing the two women inside OR Cage.

4.  They would have to hope that Cage would be emotionally affected enough to want to save another girl

5.  They would have to hope that Willow could convince Cage to help her out even though she screwed him over earlier

6.  Cage would have to go BY HIMSELF to the island

7.  You would have to set up a series of elaborate traps and scams in order to make him continue to search for the girl

8.  You would have to hope he didn't notice the giant Wicker Man statue and start to ask questions about it

9. You would murder the pilot, even though you could have just used him for the sacrifice in the first place

10.  You'd take the bullets out of his gun and somehow hope that he, a trained cop, won't notice that his gun is lighter

11. You allow Cage to put on a stupid bear suit and snatch the girl just so you can tell him that it was all a ruse

12.  You then take him and break his legs and pour bees on him, then burn him alive.  ALL OF WHICH YOU COULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT DOING ANY OF THIS OTHER CRAP.

13.  You would have to hope and pray that a missing cop, who told everyone where he was going, wouldn't be searched for.

14.  Oh, and worst of all, you'd steal his tapes.  HIS TAPES I TELLS YOU.  :grr:

sarcasm_made_Easy

and after that long list, as i see it, letting him meander the island is hardly the biggest problem of the whole movie lol

hell i didnt even realize (till you just told me) that they caused the accident.  The kid in the car didnt look anything like the she did at the end of the movie in my mind, i thought it was an unrelated emotional episode he was having, that conviently got him out of work.

QuoteOh, that's why they killed the pilot--I didn't get that either

The way i see it, thats really why they sunk the plane and destroyed the radio.  i think they killed the pilot because he let cage onto the island, he was the only one who would say they SAW cage.

does that mean we have an odiumpus complex?

macleod

no, but I wouldn't mind taking an odiumpus on the damn thing...

Pak-Man

Sister Beach goes to the Skeletor/Cobra Commander school of nefarious planning. Don't lock your nemesisup. Lead them on a pointless chase through a hostile village before locking  them up in a giant wooden frame and burning 'em after, maybe, traumatizing  them with a car wreck.

Bob

Yeah, but the whole movie to me boiled down to......... WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS TAPES?!?!?!

Why the hell was that line even in the movie, his missing tapes had nothing to do with anything!    So he does not have his "Air Supply" to listen to, so what?   Why were this missing tapes even mentioned?   :grr:

ARRRGH, at least with Manos we could excuse things due to budget and lack of film making skills, but this?    This made the Island of Dr. Mareau seem logical.
