Stephen Chow is one of my favorite Hong Kong actors/directors.  With Kung Fu Hustle released in the states he is starting to get a bigger following. My favorite film of his is The God of Cookery. It is Iron Chef with Martial Arts.  After Harvey Scissorhand's complete screw up of the Shaolin Soccer releases (partly redeemed by the DVD release) I was a little hesitant to see Kung Fu Hustle in theaters here. I had the HK dvd for a good 4 months or so. Luckily Sony did right with KFH and released it mostly uncut (they digitally removed a lot of blood) and subtitled. Hopefully the eventual Dragon Dynasty release of God of Cookery will be OK.  Other chow flicks worth seeking out:

The Sixty Million Dolllar Man
Out of the Dark
Love on Delivery
Fight Back To School 1,2,3

Before he got to do what he wanted to do film wise he was in a bunch of really bad gangster flicks where he seems really out of place not doing slapstick comedy. His newest film is called 'A Hope' and it is going to be sci-fi. I have yet to hear about a release date but hopefully it will be soon.

I bought God of Cookery from ebay.  It's not that great, and certainly not as funny as his other movies.

I haven't really heard much about it. He plays an astronaut that crashes on a planet and meets a robot! Maybe it will be a kids flick??!

You can get a lot of his flicks from yesasia.com. Some are region 3 but most are region 0. He also made a lot of period movies too that are not everyone's cup of tea.

I went to Kung Fu Hustle expecting Kung Pow and was pleasantly surprised. :^) Stephen Chow is obviously dancing to a different drum and I like his rhythm. I thought he was one-note, then my brothers showed me Shaolin Soccer. The dude knows how to make a movie that speaks to me. In another language no less. I haven't managed to track down any of his other work, but I just might get to it some day. :^)

Forbidden City Cop is pretty good.  Another good thing about Stephen Chow's movies is that he usually casts an absolutely stunning female lead to fall in love with.   ;D

from what i understand he is crazy successful and popular in china.  Thus when he makes a movie people go to see it in droves.  That little scene in kung fu hustle where he stomps on the soccer ball was his way of saying to his fans, enough already im not doing a damned sequal.

He is the top box office draw. Unlike his contemporaries he only has to make one flick every other year or so to stay popular whereas other stars have to make film after film to stay in the public eye. Apparently he was close to directing an American remake of God of Cookery with Jim Carrey but thankfully he backed out of that.

well he probably watched the last three jim carrey movies and decided it was a dumb idea, plus he seems to me like the sort of guy who would rather be in charge.  i dont think he would let someone else play HIS roles.

The Hollywood red tape is what changed his mind and I am glad. I tired of seeing my favorite HK directors become jokes due to the Hollywood machine.

yes when i think of what has happened to my poor jackie it makes me want to cry.  Its so sad to, because chow makes films so much better than a great deal of his hollywood counterparts but hollywoods ego is tremendous.

Hustle was my girlfriend's and my first date. She cried at the end, and I knew she was awesome!
FINE

sarcasm_made_Easy

at the end? when he and the chick stand there and go into the candy store or when the old tries to sell the pamphlets to the snot nosed kid?

Its weird too because i felt emotional when he and the chick went into the store and yet, there was only about 2 or so scenes where he and the girl were even on screen together

All Jackie Chan ever wanted was to be popular in America. The thing I hated the most about all the Jackie Chan films that were released here is that they cut out all the stuff that made Jackie the superstar he was in EVERY OTHER COUNTRY on the planet. The comedy. The comedy is what sets Jackie apart from everyone else. Warner Bros. still holds the rights to a lot of his Golden harvest films so hopefully we might get some good collector's sets.
