I'm really perplexed here.

You have a college background
in what

You ran a business
What was it and how many employees

You went in for a job and instead accepted one that paid less and had lower requirements
why

It doesn't add up to me. The real key to an interview is to walk in like your a salesman selling something the other person needs and should be willing to pay top dollar. Companies intentionally structure interviews in a way to try to make you feel like they're doing you a favor by hiring you rather than you doing the company a favor by being their employee. Don't fall for it, its a trap. Its the difference between you saying, "Well, I guess I could sell you my precious gold nuggets" versus them saying "well, I suppose I could buy that trash off of your property". If an employer falls into the latter, they're not worth working for.

The thing is, a lot of interviewers just aren't that good are asking the right questions to distinguish a top candidate from a sucky one. They'll focus on faults and forget whats good about you. Just as much as you probably need practice doing an interview, they need it giving one.

Bottom line is, you don't want to be a replaceable cog and it sounds like you took a position where you are. If you really are manager material to them, they'll prove it when you tell them you found a better job else where.

Pretty sure this is directed at me..

1) I have a degree in History with a minor in Geology.
I didn't just study the Dawn of Man but also the Dawn of Time, why? cause I enjoyed studying stuff like that..
Has this degree helped my land a good job? Not so far :-\

2) I still run a Spanish services business doing their taxes, translations, immigration forms, and other stuff they need help with due to the language barrier..
The economy has tanked (as well as a stupid state immigration bill) and our clientele have dwindled so my business is no longer self sufficient therefor I must find employment for a stable income.

3) Yeah I went for a Quality Assurance position and I guess they found someone else with more recent experience than I as I have been out of the field for 6 years now..
Why would I accept something lower skill and pay level than what I interviewed for? I'll refer you back to the 2nd line of #2 there; I need a stable income and the $15-$16 per hour pay for this lesser job is acceptable pay range to me and will keep me ahead of my bills for the time being.

I am still looking around and I don't expect to stay at this job for a long time but for the here and now, I'll take what ever I can get just to make sure I don't lose my house and everything I've worked for up to this point.

Oh and speaking of my Spanish services business..
We got a call from a local Mexican store that wants us to set up shop in her store there to help drum up business there so I will be loading up a tax computer, desk and chair along with other misc. papers and stuff to haul over there and we'll see how we do over the weekend.

Then a local bank that caters to the latino community called us shortly afterwards wanting the same thing - set up a tax office inside their bank!
We're already short handed and plus I don't have a spare tax computer so I may have to convert my personal laptop into a tax computer and snag a printer from another computer just to try and see if we can setup a branch in the bank! :o

And then there's the issue of not being available to assist in any technical issues that may crop up at these locations cause I will be working at my new job soon! :speechless:

Why couldn't this have happened Before I found a job?! :-[

Well, too much work is better than no work, right?  I'm glad to hear things are picking up.

:D :D I know right?

Just finished setting up location #2 (Mexican grocery store) and now we're having problems getting employees available to man the new location :scared:
Not sure about location #3 yet (the bank) as that would be a weekend only setup plus it's 10 miles away so we're still figuring that out.. :-\

Well, I got the call and.. I'm Hired! :o

I start Monday March 5 training on 1st shift from 6am - 2:30pm M-F with some Saturdays.
Starting pay is $15.00 with a 5% shift differential for working 2nd shift and 7.5% shift differential for 3rd shift.
I get paid bi-weekly which I will have Direct Deposited.
I will accrue 10 vacation days based on a 6.67 hours per month per calendar year and will be pro-rated for 2012.
I get Full medical, dental, vision, short & long term disability, and life insurance that starts May 1st.
I am eligible for 401(k) after 90 days of my hire date and the company will match my contributions.

During the conversation, the manager did say he felt I was qualified for the Quality Assurance position I originally applied for but felt I need to learn the process first and then move into a QA position over time (which I can understand) but how long could that take?? :-\

So I guess I am pleased I landed a job after the first interview (and I still have not heard from anyone else by the way).
It's not a dream job by any means but a job none the less..
And it is only a mile from my house so that's nice (especially with gas prices the way they are).

How's about he folds up that Pepsi cup real tight and rams it up your ass? Would you approve of that? Because he could do that. He's got the time.

Well then I would just have to make him sit and spin on that happy little thumb of his :o

Dim of the Yard

I got called in for a job interview next Wednesday for a job as a teaching assistant. I'm so excited, I may puke. Or that may be nerves. Either way, yay!

Mrs. Dick Courier

Had yet another interview at a hospital for a PRN.  The PRNs are the ones who sign you in for emergency room services.

This makes four interviews (two of these interviews I got a second interview) at 3 different hospitals.  Two interviewers told me with my customer service and bill collecting experience I would be good for the job.  But that I need medical experience.

So, I've decided if I can get financial aid I'm going back to school.  My local community college offers certificates in Medical Terminology and Medical Transcription.  The classes don't look to hard, and I've already taken all the Administrative classes required.  Having the experience can only help my career.  34 and going back to school, never thought I would.  God help me.

I talked with some recruiter yesterday about a job at AstraZeneca.  She sent an E-Mail saying:

Quoteyou have been confirmed  for Skype Interview with  Wipro/ AstraZeneca so I need your Skype ID for the interview.

Please confirm me your Skype ID  for interview ASAP..!!!.

Then she proceeds to call me 3 times in 5 minutes, though I wasn't here to receive the calls.

I sent her an E-Mail and I said I don't use Skype.  She writes back about 90 seconds later:

QuoteI would like to talk to you could you please let me know best time to reach you.

Then like 2 minutes later she calls me and we talk about Skype.  I tell her that I don't have a webcam or a microphone (this is true).  She asks if I can borrow one from anybody.  I say no, I can't.  I then say "If AstraZeneca can't come up with a better way to do an interview, there is no interview.  I am not going to buy new hardware for a job interview."

The recruiter then starts to balk.  I expected we would part ways, but instead she says "I'll talk to the hiring manager to see if they'll do a phone or in person interview."

Then she calls me back a minute later and asks "Can you send me a photograph of yourself and I'll send it along to see if we can schedule a phone interview."

I did that, although it was an unusual request.

It felt good to assert myself like that, after the recruiter was trying to bully me into installing Skype and buying new hardware.  It pisses me off that people setting up interviews think that if you're unemployed, you should lick their boots and call it ice cream.
