Doctor Who?

Even a cursory glance through the history books is rife with examples of where that is just not true.  Although im sure it was a pretty common feeling among white dominant societies.

Well I am just looking at the books, movies, and radio shows that were popular at the time and they sure make it seem like most people were racist to some degree.  I mean Amos and Andy was the highest rated show in the history of radio.  If people were not racist you sure couldn't tell it by what they were writing for movies, books, and radio.

uh ok.  As much as i am going to regret asking why exactly was Amos and Andy racist?

funny you mention that...... I got my dad the old TV on VHS a few years ago and we watched a few.   did not see anything racists about it.     Was like a black version of any 50s sitcom family.

But Amos and Andy was the 30s right?  The bulk of my entertainment knowledge from that era comes from the Marx brothers and Frank Capra, and i do not know anything racist in those either.

Russell

This song  better be in the movie(Since it's from the 1930's)

The Marx's did have this:

Though that isn't much, especially considering the standards of the era., In fact, yeah, the Marx Brothers were fairly progressive for their time period. Occasional blackface can't change that.

The usual case of Doc being Doc notwithstanding, history (US in particular) has been packed to the brim with racist attitudes and ideas that were super prevalent in society for quite some time. It's only quite recently (like, last few decades) that it's fallen out of popular favor. And I'm not saying this in a "Everyone back in the day was super racist" sort of way, just that it was considerably more socially acceptable for racist things to be widely present in society. Even folks who weren't racist themselves just put up with it.

I'm sorry, what was this thread about? Clint's latest Oscar bait thing?

QuoteClint's latest Oscar bait thing?

Yeah that thing.  Its about a guy who I expect will panned regardless of how much he actually accomplished or what type of person he actually was.

I said I was talking about the radio show that featured two white guys playing black men who were dumb as dirt. It was pretty much blackface on the radio. As I was saying racism was pretty widespread back then.  Even Jack Benny who was strongly against racism would make racist jokes from time to time on his shows, that is how widespread it was.  That was my point that if Hover was anything like the most people of his time he would have been at least little racist . Racism was so widespread that most people didn't even know they were being racist when they acted that way,it was just seen as the way things were. Now just because you don't know you are doing something wrong doesn't mean it's not wrong,so while it may have been the norm that does not mean it was not happening.

Look im willing to grant you the bulk of your point there.  I dont that your summary of Amos and Andy as two black men who are dumb as dirt is even CLOSE to an accurate description of the show.

Well I think we are talking about two different versions of the show.  You seem to be talking about the TV show from the 50s,I am talking about the radio show from the 30s. I have seen bits of the TV show and from what I can tell it was toned way down from what was in the radios show.

sarcasm_made_Easy

Nope definitely talking about the radio program.  I did not even know it had a TV program until i looked up the wiki just now.  I also did not realize the radio program ran for 30 years.
