Don't know about time travel, but I DO like the idea of the show focusing on the gritty underworld of the Star Wars universe. That's actually what I felt was most missing from the prequels. There were no scoundrels or cantinas. It was all squeaky-clean jedi and diners.

I've heard it said before that the instant ANY TV show whips out a time machine is the exact moment the writers have run out of ideas. (I'd personally add a Futurama clause to that statement) Not that one can't tell a good Time Travel tale, but it feels like there are lots and lots of stories that can be told in the SW Universe that aren't time-travel related...

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, The Vow, and Safe House.
Anyone want to lay odds on all of those outperforming TPM3D?

Pak-Man

My money's still on phantom menace. The only competition for the target demographic is really Mysterious Island, and I've been seeing some crafty marketing on Cartoon Network that says, "Hey kids! Like the Clone Wars? Find out what kind of trouble Anakin and Obi Wan got into when they were younger!" That's going to get some kids to drag some parents to the theater, I think.

And if I were a parent, I'd sit through Jar Jar over The Rock flexing his pecs any day. :^)

Man, the "see it on the big screen!" campaign is making me feel reeeeeeally old, having seen it on the big screen apparently so long ago that they can pretend it's never been on the big screen.

The more I think about that time travel angle, the less it makes sense. Among other things:

If they wanted to "stop Darth Vader from ever existing", how would they even know where to look? AFAIK from the movies, maybe a handful of surviving people after the events of Revenge of the Sith knew that Vader had once been Anakin Skywalker. Vader himself, Palpatine, Yoda, Obi-Wan... I think that's about it. So presuming that none of those four managed to let that information slip to a bunch of random Coruscant bandits, how would they know where to start in going about this mission?

Why would a bunch of Coruscant bandits hate Vader that much anyway? A bunch of Jedi who survived Order 66 I could understand, but this seems like an awfully idealistic thing for what are basically a gang of street toughs to decide to do. Most street gang members I know, if they had a time machine, would just use it to go back in time and bet the right way on the biggest upset sports game they could find.

Why just get rid of Vader? I mean, if Vader never existed, Palpatine would still do the same thing, but just with Dooku and/or Grievous at his side, wouldn't he? Wouldn't it be a better option, if you had a time machine, to go back to around the time of Phantom Menace, walk into the Jedi Temple, and yell: "IT'S PALPATINE!!! HE'S THE SITH LORD!!!"

Anyhow, just a thought or two...

but shouting "Palpatine is the Sith Lord" wouldn't change much. Anakin was born as a living avatar of the force (being conceived through force manipulation alone by Plageus, and one way or another was bound by fate to bring balance to it. since at the time the balance was heavily in favor of the Jedi, he still would have fallen to the dark side in order to balance the power of the Jedi.
