its a running gag to fill space that no joke really belongs. The dualing shatners is of course the epitome of it.

No, it was hilarious in the dueling shatners segment. I half expected to start hearing some dueling banjos with that one

Only if you do your "banjo" impression in a halting, Shatner-esque style...

yeah I had read that, but this was weird, it wasnt like 3 second it really was more like 9 minutes. Maybe I got the shortest version.

I have too admit something, it was an experiment and this is why I dont know the version. I decided to watch it from Xbox live pay per view. They have all the star trek movies. I figured it would be neat to see if it synched. Well, it is neat, you download the whole movie and it plays it like a DVR. It synched perfectly, I had never had a movie have no drift at all. And then it all of a sudden went a screwy around the time the trial started. I couldnt get it synched till after the mining camp scene started. Maybe this is the same thing as in that thread, it just seemed like a long time, but I guess I cant be sure, without any programs like you guys use to reauthor.

In summary xbox live pay per view does work, but there's no guarantee on the version.

That must have been the theatrical version, which I didn't even know EXISTED on video.

I've got to look around and see if I can find a place where it says what version it is. Xbox seemed promising simply because it shows mostly movies that teens would watch, so theres a lot of bad movies on there. I think there were a few rifftrax movies, figured I try this one first. and when your in a pinch $3 isnt bad for a movie rental.

Wait....what were the differences between the two?

Wait....what were the differences between the two?

In the original VHS theatrical edition Leonard Nimoy played the character Spock. However, on the DVD Collector's Edition Spock is played by a CGI monkey. I'm still not sure how that affects the Rifftrax, but there ya' go...

Wait....what were the differences between the two?

The entire subplot involving Admiral Cartwright and Rene Auberjonois' character (see? I'm not even enough of a Trekkie to remember his name) being in on the assassination plot is gone, for one thing. When the would-be assassin gets shot at the end ("You're not bacon!"), he's never unmasked, and no one asks why he's lying in a pool of non-Klingon blood.

Ahhh....well that seemed kind of important to the film....

sarcasm_made_Easy

yeah who needs a plot, those dumb trekkers will buy anything.  snip snip  bye bye continuity.

yeah I would have like to have seen that. I'm betting xbox used the short version to save precious space on their hard drives.

I FINALLY got a hold of a copy of the movie at the local Blockbuster last night. Good stuff. I remember seeing Star Trek VI on TV a while back and not being able to think about anything other than the president calling someone a dumbass. Glad to see they picked up on it too. I was surprised that they pointed out that the Klingon judge was the same actor who played the dumb cracker in Giant Spider Invasion. Nice peice of  MST3K nostalgia. I could definitely see the resemblance once they mentioned it. I have to disagree with their assessment that GSI was a better movie, though. For me, ST VI is much easier to sit through than that cheeseheaded flop any day. I mean, come on, Shatner's hamminess is worth the whole crazy thing. Too bad David Warner got killed off so soon. They might have worked in some Delta Knights jokes if he'd stuck around longer.

I really enjoyed the stretch of free-form minnesotant dialogue. Who other than the big three would have made such effective and beautiful use of a long stretch of ice scenery?

I find it funny that even though I'm a born and bred Texan, I sympathize with the Midwestern humor found in MST3K and Rifftrax so much more than the humor of those from my native South. Maybe it's that I just don't cotton with the "bigger is better" attitude of most Texans. I like my humor passive-aggressive, thank you.
