Last year I missed the Rifftrax show at ComicCon (because I had never heard about Rifftrax then  :( ) Is there gonna be another show this July? If so, will it be possible to buy tickets or is it on a first come first serve kind of thing??

Given that Rifftrax HQ is in San Diego, I'd guess that the chances of them showing up for it are about 99%. But wait for one of the RT staff to confirm that.

As for the tickets... heh. As I understand it, the panels at SDCC are basically first come, first serve. But the rooms aren't usually cleared out between panels, so as a result you have folks who will basically camp out in a room 4 or more hours before the panel that they're really there to see starts. As a result, sometimes you don't get any significant movement in the seats from hour to hour. However, it's been a while for me and San Diego. Can anyone who was there last year confirm that this was the case? (That's just for a panel, BTW. There's a number of autograph sessions and those are much easier to attend.)

And, just in case, you have a ticket to the con itself already, correct?  Because I'm pretty sure that they're sold out right now, and flying across nine timezones to get to San Diego and then not get in would be rather disappointing for you.

Tickets are indeed sold out...have been for a while, I think. Even when registering as a professional they had a specific warning that said all guest passes were used up and no longer available either.

Jeez, they sold out in November!

So is comic-con really worth dealing with many people?

Honestly? Yeah.

Torso, I don't know if you've ever been to one of the major cons, but they're really unique experiences.

Most geekish hobbies are, for whatever reason, not something embraced by a large portion of the populace. It doesn't matter if it's sci-fi, comic books, anime, Star trek, RPGs or whatever. (Although there have been a few studies that show that a majority of the populace call themselves Star Trek fans, but that's not important.) For most fans of genre stuff, the circle of other folks who they know who share their interests tends to be fairly small. And folks get used to that.

But when you go to a big con, suddenly you're surrounded by thousands if not tens of thousands of people who have the same interests. When you make a reference to something obscure that normally results in blank stares, these folks get the reference. And not only are you among like-minded people, you're surrounded by people who are actively courting your interest. From the big movie companies trying to get you interested in their movies to the webcomic artist in the artist's room trying to get a few more eyeballs on their labor of love, these are all people who really want you to like them.  Plus there's a hell of a lot of stuff to buy in the dealer's room. That really can't be underestimated.

Yeah, San Diego may be getting to the point where there's too many people in too small a space, but it and other cons like it should probably be experienced at least once, just to see if they resonate with you. With a lot of fans, they do.

It's fun to do once. Go for the ride and don't go with an itinerary that hits specific panels and you'll have a pretty good time.

I don't care about comic books, am fed up with hollywood, am bored to the point of being physically ill by most manga...yet I manage to have a blast while I'm there. It is so much of a clusterf**k of all things shiny and nerdy that if you associate with geek culture at all..you're going to find something that interests you.

I have been to small local comic-conventions (Boston, Seattle). The biggest con I ever went to was the second MST3K one. But that was what 2000, 3000 people? I doubt I could handle the 125,000 that show up for SDCC.  No guarantees to see what you want to see, having to wait hours for panels just doesn't sound like fun.

Now if they had some premium passes that gave you a guarantee then I might be cool with it.

When I went to SXSW where there were over a 100,000 people and my premium pass got me into every single event I wanted to.

WIth comic con, you really can't go in planning to see specific panels unless they're the smaller ones that don't have anything to do with movies or tv....probably one reason I have fun is because the sci-fi/fantasy writing panels are always dead. :D

...but as I said, if you just go in with the mentality of, "Ok, no expectations...follow the story..." you'll be fine. It's only 3 days.

Yeah, I have got tickets for thursday, friday and sunday. And I know that there was a Rifftrax panel but I could have sworn I read somewhere that there was a Rifftrax performance by the guys near the convention center, in a regular theatre? Was that part of ComicCon or a separate event?

Yeah, there was a performance of The Matrix last year at the Stone Cold Brewery. That was a separate event.  I'd keep an eye out here to see if they announce anything, because there hasn't been anything announced just yet.

Rifftrax-Loving Dutchman

I found what I meant..Mike, Bill and Kevin did a Rifftrax of Plan 9 From Outer Space on Saturday July 26th at San Diego's Historic Balboa Theatre

Will they do another show, you think, this year?? Was the last time a success?

That was back in '08. As of right now there is nothing of that scope planned...and this late in the game, I really wouldn't expect it to change.
