(in this case he also has the added bonus of being a spitting image of Eli Roth. Come on, that can't just be me),

Ha!  It wasn't just me then!   :D

It may be the clothing. I just know my brother and I pretty much said the same thing as soon as he appeared.

As for the orphanage in the middle of nowhere... I guess it's supposed to keep them from running away (that principal said the place wasn't a prison, but it's pretty close).

Speaking of orphanages, anyone see The Orphanage (Del Toro produced it)? I was thinking of that movie when watching this one, even if the similarities are superficial at best.

Vacas is still my favourite Spanish Civil War movie.

Sorry, I got a chuckle out of this statement.  Of course, you would have a favorite Spanish Civil War movie.  Who doesn't these days?

:P

P.S.  I'll see your "Vacas" (whatever that is, something about Cows apparently) and raise you a "For Whom The Bell Tolls".  Which I have not seen, but it has Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman and was nominated for 9 Oscars.  It's on Netflix Watch Instantly so let me check some of it out and I'll get back to you.   :P

Ah crud, it's nearly 3 hours long.  I hope it gets interesting fast or I'm gonna bail on it.  :P

And when are we going to announce the next movie?  Sometime this weekend I hope!

Homage to Catalonia is one of my favourite books.

Eh I didn't even consider that one, I'm thinking Spanish made movies about their Civil War. :)

Yeah I've seen Vacas a bunch of times and I like it quite a bit. :)

Netflix doesn't have it and I can't seem to find it through my "other" means.  So I'll have to take your word on it.  It does have something to do with cows though, right?

I have a similar problem with finding a copy of Volere volare

It does; they're the passive witnesses to both the story of the family at the heart of the film and the atrocities committed during the war. Occasionally we have scenes filmed in "Cow Cam", sort of. :)

I think I have an old video of it knocking about at my mother's house (unless Strictly Come Dancing was taped over it or something after I left  :D) I could ask her to have a search for it I suppose. :)

Spoiler

There's some freaky stuff going on in that movie, but it sure looks interesting.  Too bad it seems to be very out of print.  I'll save it to my Netflix queue, that way if it is ever re-released, I'll remember to rent it.

That one is available on Netflix, but only streaming.

I've never heard of it, but it sounds fun.  It actually came out the same year, 1991, as one of my favorite Italian comedies, "Johnny Stecchino".  Which is also hard to find for some reason.

I added Volere Volare to my watch instantly queue.  I'll try to check it out.

Hmm must be recent, I dropped Netflix a while back but I looked for it prior to that and I didn't see it then.

Great film with an excellent sequence involving inappropriate sound effects. :)

According to Instantwatcher.com, it is only available until July 1st.  So anyone interested better jump on it now if they want to check it out.   :P

Edward J Grug III

OK, I just caught up. Like I said, I had seen it before - it's still a fantastic movie, though I think pan's Labyrinth surpasses it. I don't have a lot to say about it really - it's so much easier to comment on a film that gets everything wrong. :P

I give it an 8.

-The last shot of Santi on the water was a bit much. As was the girl's scream in one of his early appearances.

That scream is laughable and out of place. But it's a pretty minor nitpick given how great the over-all movie is.

-Locking yourself in a closest to hide from a ghost? Really?

Well it worked, didn't it?

I'll go with the previous scores of 7-7.5.

Seven minus seven point five? So a negative point five then? (Seriously, I'm using these scores to figure out the average here, so pick one. ;P)

So, let's go with the next choice already!
FINE

Dr. Whopoopeepee

I had also seen this before, but I think I liked it more the second time around.  Any time children are involved a horror movie can have more of an impact for me.  Unless the kids can't act.  Usually I hate child acting, but when they're speaking in a language other than English, it's harder to tell how bad they're acting.  These kids seemed really good to me.  I love Del Toro's visual style in everything he's done so far.

Good pick for the third film.

I'll give it an 8.5.

I'll give it an 8.5.

Which makes the average score for this movie 7.89* - by far the most popular choice so far.

Compare to the rest of the scores in the master thread.

*I made a pretty girl is like's vote a 7.25 - the average of the two scores given.
FINE

Relaxing Dragon

Just to throw this in, I also did get around to watching Wah Wah. Gets a 7.25 from me.

In fact, since you gave it a higher score than anybody, you should really post your thoughts on the film, you seem to be the only one who really liked it!
