Their leadership was evil, I'll agree with that.  But the common soldier didn't really have a choice; it was join or die.  I know, ex-Nazis made the same case, but marching civilians to death camps is a little different.  I'm not defending the Japanese in WWII in anyway; but it is interesting to see another point of view.

How is marching civilians to death camps any different than torturing prisoners, or the horrifying massacre of civilians in China or Korea?  The average Nazi soldier had far cleaner hands than the average IJA soldier.  Not saying much, but still.

We firebombed Dresden, nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing thousands of civilians, and put US citizens of Japanese ancestry into internment camps in our own country.  I'm not trying to defend the Imperial Japanese, but they were not the only ones that weren't specifically playing by the rules at the time.

This is why I hate seeing WW2 shown as an epic struggle of good against evil,it was really just two evil empires butting heads and the rest of the world being stuck in the middle.  No one won,one side just enslaved the world.  If there were any justice ever leader of the US in WW2 would have been charged with war crimes.  School should teach that FDR was a dictator just as evil as Hitler.  What separates Hitler from FDR is that FDR won.

How was the US any less evil.  FDR censored the press.  He through every Japanese American in death camps.  He also ordered the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of people.  The USA was not good,we just won so we got to write the history books.

Yeah but we didn't go into the war to stop it. In fact it was ignored and covered up by the government,so in a way you could say the US helped carry out The Holocaust.    Also the blacks were still getting lynched and beaten to death in the US,so i don't think we can take the high ground there.

ANYWAYS...

I've said this before in a similar thread, I believe - but I wanna see Quentin Tarantino do a movie with A) a straightforward plot that that doesn't swing around in chapters (if he did that in Jackie Brown, good for him, but I haven't seen the movie); and B) an actual score as opposed to temp track music (even if he does a great job with music selection.) If only he hadn't been so bent on getting Basterds to Cannes, we might have had another glorious original Morricone score, but noooo...

That, or make a balls-to-the-wall sci-fi/superhero action movie, with the hero(ine)'s best trait being that he/she never shuts up to give the villain their chance at revealing their dastardly plan.

That IS something I want to see, though it would go more like this...

"So, Goldtaker, you've got me.  What's this all about?  Breaking into the Pentagon?  Hijacking a nuclear submarine?  What is..."
*Bang*
"Hans, anybody else tries to stop us, go ahead and shoot them.  Oh, and tell the guards to take a moment and aim first.  Bullets cost money."   ;D
One Man Band Riffs.  18 riffs, over 600 served, since 2009.

THE QUEEN!!!

WWII is a fascinating subject. I'd be cool with movies of those. It would be nice to have a war film that wasn't so annoyingly anti war and was just like "sometimes we're forced into it and there's no backing out". I'm not saying I'm for or against the current war, I'm just saying I'm sick of hollywood's extremely pushy "anti war" propaganda. And WWII is a good way to say "the war exists, we don't have to be for or against". I must be tired because these sentences don't make sense to me. Well I knew what I meant.

Frankly, I've seen enough of WWII. What about WWI? We had Flyboys, and...well, that's the only WWI movie of recent existence that I can remember (aside from that film Passchendaele out of Canada, but I haven't seen that yet.)

That, or if we're gonna stay on WWII, whay not some of the lesser known battles, like the Battle of the Aleutian Islands? So far only John Houston tackled that harrowing battle, and it was in a propaganda film.

Japanese internment camps were not death camps.
The press being censored does not equal murdering six million Jews.
Every wartime leader "orders the slaughter" of hundreds of thousands of people.  That's the point of a war.

Have you seen Paths of Glory? It may be the one of the five best movies ever made about war.  Also Sargent York is one of my all time favorites.

Neither one.  They are on my list though.  One of these days...

I would love to be surprised in a movie again.  I don't say that in a "Hollywood is predictable" way, I mean that I would love for some things to be kept secret.  The Marvel films are a good example:  Imagine if in say, Thor, Iron Man came out of nowhere and teamed up with him and you didn't expect it?  You would lose your shit because it would be so awesome.  I know, the obvious answer is just to stay away from internet movie news, but I just can't do it.  I like the internet too much.

It still means that he ignored the constitution and pretty much made himself a dictator who put anyone who questioned him behind bars.  If Bush had done the same thing he would have been impeached and rightly so.

I'm just saying i sick of seeing movies that paint the US as pure good in WW2,that was not the case.

I mean we A bombed two cities in a country that was no longer a threat just to show the world that we could do it.

People on all sides did things they wish they hadn't done in WWII. And in pretty much every war ever fought. There.

I would like to see more movies that aren't afraid of ending in a non-happy manner. That was one of the reasons I actually kinda liked Cloverfield - for all the annoying "OH GOD"s, it at least had the balls to go out the way it did. The ending was the main reason a lot of my friends hated the movie, but I give credit to the writers for not going with the miraculous happy ending.

I mean, just once - just once, can a villain actually defeat the hero? Please? Hollywood? I would love to see that.
