Isn't it a little soon to reboot Fantastic Four?  It's only been two movies and, what, 4 or 5 years?
Didn't stop Hulk.

Yeah, I don't know how Ang Lee screwed that one up.  Hulk gets big and destroys things.  Roll credits.  I didn't pay twelve bucks to see him talk about his childhood.

That one bothered me too.  It confused me too.  I was like... "Didn't they just release an Incredible Hulk movie?"

You know this movie is going to be very easy to fuck up because Ol Cappy is a bit corny and out dated as it is .Making this work and not be a ready made rifftrax is going to be hard. Just doesn't seem like it would translate well on the screen which is why it hasn't been done successfully yet . But the human torch guy !!!!!! He suck so bad and fantastic for was god-awful as it could be? How do these casting people still have jobs ? They miss nine of ten times ! P.s. Ryan Reynolds is pretty funny but he is A. a crappy actor and B a crappy actor who only works on the van wilder level. The only thing I didn't hate about him as deadpool is that as deadpoop he was unrecognizable as deadpool so later they can use him again and most people wont even know he was a character in a movie before !

Johnny Unusual

I think that Joe Johnson for his faults, is a really good choice for director.  He has directed some lame films (including the recent Wolfman movie, so I hear), but I really like the Rocketeer and Johnson is good at tapping into an old fashioned style of filmmaking that would work for Cap.  I think the style needs to evoke the great serials of the past and mix in the humanity that makes a lot of the Marvel heroes so compelling.  Cap is interesting because he doesn't really have a "hook" like a lot of the Marvel heroes have (at least for the first fi, so there might be a disadvantage there, but I think there is a lot in his character and the premise to mine (that said, the best stuff is when he becomes unfrozen and becomes a man out of time.  That aspect was always interesting to me.)

Chris Evans as Cap?  Easy to poopoo, but beyond his irritating Human Torch (which is the fault of the way the character is written) I don't know much about his talent and will wait to see what happens there.

I think Johnny touched on the biggest obstacle they have to overcome with this film - what's the theme? There's a good reason they stopped making Cap comics after the war - he was basically created as walking propaganda. If Stan Lee never had the brilliant idea of bringing him back in the '60s with the man-out-of-time angle (which only gets better the longer he's been frozen), I doubt many people would even be aware of Captain America outside of comics historians.

It's funny, that just made me realize that Cap had only been frozen for 20 years, from the mid 40s to the mid 60s. For some reason, in my mind, I figured he'd been frozen a lot longer than that.

But yeah, I've got high hopes for this movie. I'd prefer somebody more stoic in the role, but I'm curious to see where they go with this. And Joe Johnson is definitely a solid choice for director.

Yeah, he can't be smiley "USA is a-okay" guy because that's a pretty niche market, I'm assuming there'll be some crooked politicians involved in something that will at least make him somewhat jaded.

It's one of those sliding comics timeline things. When Stan Lee brought Cap back in Avengers #4 in 1964 he'd been frozen for 20 years, but as real-world time's gone on, he's always been thawed out "just a few years ago," right after the Avengers first formed. It's a nice aspect of the wonky continuity of Marvel comics that as time marches on, the length of Cap's suspended animation grows, which means they never have to ditch the man-out-of-time aspect. Right now, in Marvel time, he was frozen for about 60 years, as it will be in the movie.

Nice shop. Don't like the cowl design, though. Is that from the Ultimate Alliance game, I think?

I saw something that was supposedly, posibly concept designs for the costume that looked pretty good. It had a mask/helemt hybrid deal that I liked, but without the silly chinstrap Bryan Hitch gave Cap in Ultimates 2.

warofthebees

Occasionally Cap does get fed up with politics and leaves his role...during Watergate, he called himself "Nomad", for instance.  I'm glad the movie is coming out now, rather then in the Bush years, because I get the feeling that the film would have been too cynical if it came out then.  Don't believe me?  Read The Ultimates volume 1 and then tell me otherwise.

As long as there's no wacky montage of Captain America trying to figure out an iPod or turning on a radio and recoiling in disgust, I'll be happy.  Or maybe I just described the film's second act?
