I'm sure the families of those victims are just cracking up thinking about the anniversary a few days from now.  I'm sure the families of the soldiers who are battling terrorists everyday are preparing their own comedy bits.

You know what?  I really hope they are.  If they have the strength to laugh then that means the healing has begun.  They deserve to be able to laugh.  We need to laugh, even at death, to keep from going crazy.

From personal experience (ive been to iraq and plan on going back)  you do laugh at a lot of things people would be surprised about.

Quotei think its too soon for 911 but give it 30 years.

Well, it's been over 40 years since JFK and I'm not exactly seeing any sitcoms on that.

true no sitcoms, but there are a few jokes in a couple different series.  i think the simpsons has had a few.  i know there is one in the dilbert cartoon show, and family guy probably has made a couple as well.

Make a unpopular statement or joke about 9/11 and get you public ridicule and hatred.

Make a movie dramatizing the event of 9/11 and you get hundreds of millions of dollars.

Get your head screwed on straight, and get mad about the RIGHT things.

Joe Don Faker

I hear you on the movie profits front. (Though, there are a couple of mitigating factors people may wish to consider:  In the case of United 93, the filmmakers reportedly worked very closely with families of victims.  And with regard to both that movie and World Trade Center, a portion of earnings was donated to victims and/or memorials.  And both have been generally considered to be respectful presentations.)

But I agree with you that it doesn't sit well, to profit so greatly from portraying this event.

Here are the figures from Box Office Mojo:

QuoteFlight 93
Production Budget: $15 million
Total Earnings: Domestic $31.5 +  Foreign $32.3 = Worldwide $63.7 mil
Donated:  10% of opening weekend gross (or, approx $1.2 mil)  was promised toward a memorial - Newsweek

World Trade Center
Production Budget: $65 million
Four-Week Current Domestic Total Earnings: $64.3 mil  Set for worldwide release over the next few weeks.
Donated:  10% of first weekend earnings, or 2.6 mil (5% to memorial, 5% to victims funds)- USA Today

So clearly there are substantial bucks being made ...

QuoteGet your head screwed on straight, and get mad about the RIGHT things.

... but I don't know how that point precludes or renders pointless the disgust someone may feel about a crass joke at the expense of the dead.  I mean, it's possible to feel anger about one, or the other, or both.

I feel angry that i dont have a glass of lemonade right now.   >:(

What do the soldiers who invaded Iraq have to do with September 11?

Who cares? They're soldiers. They get paid to be killed. And don't give me that "they needed college money" shit. They want to kill people. And as long as people who want to kill people are killing other people who want to kill people, it all works out.

sarcasm_made_Easy

How do u figure us troops WANT to kill people?

You ever WANT to do the job you get paid for?

And the thread digresses...

I trust Mike to make whatever joke he feels comfortable making. If he wanted to make a joke about the WTC, he would have. End of story for me.

ZachsMind can say whatever he wants. But he also has the right to be dubbed a complete asshole for making such a comment. I'm not one of his biggest fans, so this is just one more thing, but I wouldn't ban him or say he needs to leave or anything along those lines.

That's it for me.

Here's another riff:

(External Shot of WTC) Hey isn't that Nic Cage?

I actualy find it more offensive that Hollywood is trying to make a quick buck off the tradgedy.  Flight 93 and WTC are shining examples of what NOT to do, but I guess documentaries on the subject don't crank out as much cash.

Quote from: ambitiously stupid on September 05, 2006, 10:55:47 AMThis will be my last post on this subject.  I want to just enjoy rifftrax as much as anybody.  And make friends not pick fights. However, I feel obligated to be a voice of reason when it comes to this. Call me uptight, tell me I need to lighten up but 9/11 is not funny.  Not tomorrow, not next week, not 30 years from now, not ever.  I'm sure the families of those victims are just cracking up thinking about the anniversary a few days from now.  I'm sure the families of the soldiers who are battling terrorists everyday are preparing their own comedy bits.
I also feel obliged to be a voice of reason so I must say this.  Yes, 9/11 is not funny.  A joke about 9/11 can be funny, however.  Laughing at a joke about 9/11 is one thing.  Laughing at 9/11 is another thing entirely and I think it's this distinction that you're missing...

QuoteAdmittedly, where it wasn't funny was the twelve references to Bella Lugosi's heroin addiction. The first one was kinda funny but Mike kept going back to that well and it wasn't becoming.

So in Zach'sMind it is ok to poke fun at 9/11 but please don't mock Bella Lugosi's heroin addiction from 40 plus years ago.  Where was all the tragedy plus time equals comedy comments? Where were the matter of perspective comments?  I guess it wasn't becoming.
I haven't seen the context to all this but from here it looks like Zach'sMind was complaining about the repetition of the joke rather than the subject matter...

PlayMSTie

I haven't either, but the words "wasn't becoming" tend to suggest inappropriateness.
