Great performances in otherwise really awful movies.

Frankie and Mojo gave the best performance in all of Transformers 2.

I beg to differ. The car Shia, Megan and the irritating guy used to get away from the Species hybrid gave a better performance.
Being a genocidal maniac is not one of my turn ons.

Is it weird to hear the Safety Dance in my head watching Game of Thrones?

A remarkable one...considering how many laws of physics it broke to keep everyone in it from going through that whole ordeal without getting even a scratch.

Indeed it did! It should be nominated for an Oscar.

To the point that I've been tempted to write to "Mythbusters" to show whether or not three people could possibly go through all of that - from the head on collision with the light pole with no seat belts to being dropped from an amazing height and landing on the roof of the car - without sustaining some sort of life-altering injury....

But is there any real "myth" to it?

Well, Commando did the first thing, so at least part of Hollywood seems to think it's possible.

Hollywood thinks that every time a car goes off a cliff it explodes when it lands...and "Mythbusters" proved that wrong.   ;)

Doctor Who?

I thought Ewan McGregor was really trying and did a good job in the Star War Prequels.  Too bad no one else was trying and he was given such bad scripts he couldn't save it,but he did try.

RoninFox

Yeah, Ewan seemed to have a decent balance between playing homage to Alec's performance while still making the part his own.  If you ignore how bad the dialoge is the performance really works, especially in episodes 2 and 3.

Doctor Who?

Yeah that is what strikes me every time I watch them.  He is giving the lines his all and in any other movie I think people would have talked about what a good job he did,but the lines he is giving his all are so bad no one noticed what a good job he did.

McGregor and Pernilla August (Shmi Skywalker) are the only two trying in those films, IMHO (again, overlooking the bad dialogue)

Cosmic Muse

I have to agree. With what little guidance he had to work with (Lucas has always been more proficient at thinking up FX pieces than guiding flesh and blood actors in their performance.) Ewan McGregor's performance as Obi Wan was better than all the rest. And that's sad considering that under more capable directorial hands the other actors like Natalie Portman have shown that they are talented in their craft.

I always felt that way about Tim Curry in Legend....but I might be alone in that.

Oh no, I thought Tim Curry was awesomely evil in that movie, Tangerine Dream music or not. And his costume was pretty scary looking too.

Tim Curry kicked ass in that role. Many times have I imagined the scary costume removed in his scenes and he still kicks ass (though the costume does add some emphasis). I also kind of thought the kid playing Gump did an awesome job. What with having to act against a weird, dubbed in voice and all (I think. Even scarier if that's his real voice). A lot of people knock Legend around as a bad movie, but I've always adored it and I'm not afraid to admit it.

Gotta agree on both of those, but then I enjoy Legend anyway.  And according to the director's commentary, yeah that kid's voice was dubbed in later.  He tried to get the original voice track for the director's cut, but couldn't find it.  Apparently he loved the kid's voice, but one of the producers hated it because he had a German accent.  He said the kid sounded like a Nazi.

Legend is a lot better in the Director's Cut - Jerry Goldsmith's score is a big reason the film was a fairly decent hit in Europe. But of course, the American distributors had to go Sandy Frank on the damn movie...

Insofar as great performances in crappy films - I'd take a lot of the cast of Troy. Miscast, yes - but they sure as hell didn't phone in their performances.

Charlize Theron is amazing in Monster; the movie itself, less so.

Ditto for Halle Berry in Monster's Ball.

William Fichtner (the guy from "Invasion" and the bank manager with the shotgun in The Dark Knight).

Great in general but really great in Ultraviolet and Equilibrium...

Bob

I would have to pretty much nominate Jason Statham in..... well, just about anything.

He CAN be in good movies (The Bank Job), but they generally are not good, but him being in them make them fun to watch.
