What Trekie things did we learn from this 'rendition'..?

Eh. I guess Star Trek isn't an awful movie but, honestly, I don't think I've ever seen any film that's more obviously just mere set-up for the inevitable sequel. The point of the movie isn't to tell a story really; it's to assemble the cast in one place and slot them into their designated roles. So we get one ridiculous coincidence and silly contrivance after another. The utter ridiculousness of Kirk going straight from disgraced cadet to captain is just the most obvious manifestation. Also Bruce Greenwood stole all his scenes, making everyone else seem like complete lightweights.

Nu-Trek does continue the time-honored Star Trek trend of ruining the Vulcans; fortunately I've seen enough of "Enterprise" to become inured to that sort of thing.
