Vikings fan? What the hell do you guys have to complain about?

Come down to Detroit and root for the Lions for a season or two... or the fifty since the last championship game appearance. At least the Vikings got to be the "Buffalo Bills of the 70s" and sniff a handful of Super Bowls. The only sad-sack NFL franchise that rivals the Lions are the Browns. (The Cardinals don't count, nobody gives a shit about the Cardinals)

Bob

I was rooting for a new and improved Marty (say Marty 2.0), but I think you only got Marty 1.5 beta....... and there were some bugs still there.   If it is any consolation, your new operating system for next year will probably be Cam Cameron 1.0.**

** Before the Texans hired their new guy, Cameron can to Houston to interview.   He made great foder for the sports talks shows the next day as he was the only coach that anyone could remember who talked about themselves in the third person.   They still joke about it today.

Yeah, I stopped following the Cardinals when they left STL to go out west.  Damn was I happy when the Rams moved to STL.   I ordered my season tickets (hence the user name PSLOwner) 12 years ago and have been very happy with the swap.   I do need aviation fuel to go down so my weekly flights to STL from Houston get cheaper.   But at least I have a built in excuse to see the family when I fly up.   IF you are ever in STL near the dome, look for my name (and my dogs name!) on the listing of PSL owners on the stadium.   You will Bob Reed and Shadow Reed there in bronze.   Hint, Shadow is the dogs name.

Arizona happens to be my underdog team :-P I play as them when people complain about being the Colts in the Maddan games haha. Funny thing is I still win ;)

Haha, or the Detroit Tigers, man I was at the metrodome in the smoking area when these Detroit guys were there too and we started razzin each other as fans do (all in good fun of course). But the best insult came from my buddy who asked how long [the detroit guy] had been waiting to wear his Jersey in pubic... he was speechless and it was priceless.

Funny you bring that up...  a buddy and I made a road trip to Minnesota this year when the Tigers were there. We saw three out of the four game series (Sept 7th, 8th and 9th). It was kind of a bummer, as the Tigers only took one out of the three games we attended and watching baseball in a dome is near-sacrilege. Still, we had a good time and the fans were all generally pretty friendly. Not only that, but one of the games was Jack Morris bobblehead night. Sure, it's not Jack Morris in a Tigers uniform, but Jack Morris nonetheless. I don't recall being asked how long I had waited to wear my jersey... but a lot of beer was consumed over those three games and I am a smoker... so that could have very well been me that your buddy poked with his rapier wit.

Wow, small world I too had consumed my share of beverages ;) It may be sacrilege to play baseball in a dome but its all I've ever known, so I like it. The Twins wont be in a dome for long of course as we get a new "out door" stadium in a couple of years... outdoor baseball in the midwest... I'm still not sold on the idea. Anyway, I've always wanted to travel to another stadium but that dream will have to wait until I get rid of all my college debt first.

On a side note I met the Twins manager Ron Gardenhire today along with a few other twins, as they were promoting the team at a local bar. I didn't have much to say I talked to the pitcher Pat Neshek (our sidearmer) but made the mistake of mentioning the wrong hometown (he's from Minnesota but I just said the wrong town) ... he corrected me and seemed annoyed and quickly walked away :) Also, I had Gardenhire and Rick Anderson (the pitching coach) sign my hat. Gardy seams like a really nice guy.

I'm sure that Minneapolis is a little nastier than Detroit in regards to winter, and there have been a couple of opening day games here that featured temps in the 30's and accumlating snowfall on the field... but it's rare. Overall, there is nothing I enjoy more than playing hooky from work on a lazy Wednesday or Thursday afternoon in the middle of summer and catching a Tigers game. In fact, my buddy and I managed to take personal and/or sick days on just about every weekday day game this season. Makes ya feel like a kid again. If you ever decide to take a road trip to Detroit to catch a Twins game, let me know. I'll buy you a beer and then proceed to heckle your choice of jersey. :)

What do I have to complain about!?  You're asking ME what I have to COMPLAIN about!?!?!?

Don't talk about the Bud Grant years to ME, buddy!  I wasn't around in the '70's, so I don't remember anything about Vesuvius blowing her top or Emperor Titus coming to power.  I wasn't around in the 1970's, either!

At least with the Lions you don't get disappointed - you KNOW they're going to suck!  The Vikings build your hopes up during the regular season, only to crush them in the most heartbreaking way possible.  From the squad that lost the NFC Championship by a field goal in 1998 after going 15-1 to the epic midseason collapse of, well...3 out of the last 4 years, the Vikings are the masters of figuring out how to screw up in situations where it's damn-near impossible to screw up.  To be honest, I'd feel a lot better if they just flat-out sucked.
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

I have sympathy for you, I really do. The Lions of the 90's were stacked with talent but could never get over the hump. We had one of the greatest three running backs to ever suit up and he was stuck with management that either didn't spend money or spent it the wrong way. With a few breaks here and there as far as careers being cut due to injury and boneheaded front office moves, the Lions could have easily battled the Cowboys throughout the 90's for NFC supremecy.

That said, those are such incredibly happy times compared to the Millen era's record trainwreck of 24 wins and 72 losses. Having some hope, even if you know it will be dashed, is much preferrable to having no hope at all. Come back and talk to me after the Vikings average 4-12 for six straight seasons.

EDIT:

PS - Nice reference to those funky, funky 70s. I knew I should have specified the NINETEEN70s. :P
