Phantom of Krankor

I just have no interest in anime at all. The problem is that the premise is nearly always too bizarre or uninteresting to begin with. They're always "A cute mouse has a bloodlust and likes to kill space vampires with his magic ninja-sword-chuks" or "a girl with enormous eyes and breasts in a mysteriously unexplained schoolgirl outfit turns out to be the princess/savior of the kingdom/universe, and she rides to justice on her unicorn motorcycle."

They just randomly combine concepts and then put in lots of single-color-backgrounds-moving-rapidly behind people flying mid-air with their mouths open, and quivering slightly.

I love sci-fi, I'm okay with fantasy, but it needs to make SOME KIND of sense and not just be random images.

I have to agree there. The one poblem I have with anime is the violence. I mean, I can handle very violent live action movies like Apocalypto, Kill Bill, Sin City, and Blade. But I just can't handle extreme violence in cartoons. I don't know why that is. It makes me sick to my stoumach whenever I see it ( especially in the animatrix in the scene where that one robot crushes that guy's head with livid detail ).

The one type of anime style I really do like ( not exactly japanese made, but similar in style ) are the Genndy Tartakovsky shows like Dexter's Laboratory, Powerpuff girls, Samurai Jack, and the Star Wars clone wars series. Its much better animation ( in terms of movement ) and the action scenes are spectacular in some of those shows.
I am Ambassador Phantom, from the planet Krankor! I am rapidly approaching your planet... in the warship, which you have just seen. I will arrive tomorrow night at precisely eight o'clock. At that time I shall make my wishes known to you. You will obey them... or die! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA!

Cartoon violence is best viewed in Looney Tunes imho. Anime is fun, but Looney Tunes is funner

its not always true that anime is that way, but its most often true.  Trying to find good anime is essentially like trying to pan for gold. You filter out TONS of shit but what you eventually find is amazingly valuable.

Sorry I'm jumping in late here (was out of town for a while).

Disney: Classic Disney is AWESOME. Modern Disney is CRAP. However, with that a**hole Mike Eisner out of the way and Pixar wanting to move Disney back where it belongs in traditional animation, I'm not fully ready to consider it a dead horse that needs to be kicked over a cliff, yet. Only time will tell.

Pirates: Years before I saw POTC, I played a character on a MUSH that I, if I were paranoid, would believe had been copied and turned into Jack Sparrow. I know it's all coincidence but it's still awesome to see a carbon copy of him up on the big screen. Because of this, I'd have to say that Jack is the best pirate.  ;D

Anime: Generally can't stand the stuff. I got sick of the art style, ridiculous storylines, and overblown voice acting years ago. I can count on one hand how many anime shows are worth it (Cowboy Bebop being one of them, of course) but generally I think it's overrated. I tend to side with Daltysmith and Pak in that there are so many anime shows out there that, just by numbers, most are going to be crap with only the tiniest minority being worthwhile.

the thing i think is interesting about anime is there doesnt seem to be any middle ground, its either really really impressive (cowboy bebop or miyazaki) or its utter rubbish.  only the extremes. ive never seen an anime and thought eh that was ok.

Actually, Trigun sort of fell into that mediocre category for me for a while, until I delved a bit more into it, then decided it was worthwhile. So....er....I suppose you're right.

Yeah. Naruto, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon have all nearly made me go homicidal on various occasions. I've almost burned Pak's Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh videogames on various occasions also to cleanse our house. He won't let me for some reason.

yeah trigun is MUCH better then second time around once you realize the story of how it all works and vash is and all.  so any thing good twice round is usually better than american tv.

Pak-Man

There's some way cool Christology going on in Trigun. :^)

Dragon Ball Z is not good anime, but it is AWESOME Riffing Material! (Hint Hint! :^)) Me and my brothers would sit around it religiously and make fun of the drawn out battles and goofy characters. It (And a lot of bad anime) can be fun if you watch it in the MST3K mindset. (Hint hint. :^))

long drawn out battles and poor animation aside DBZ has some damned likeable charectars(damned spelling).  I think thats really the whole reason the show has done so well.

I'll say this for anime - the Japanese do one heck of a lot better producing the genre that they produce, than American animation companies do.

Sci Fi/Action cartoons for the US include "Teen Titans"...... and (?)

Actually I take it back, the US did a good job with Batman TAS

It's because there's such a large demand for Sci Fi in Japan than in the US, there for it is more risky for a US company to make a Sci Fi cartoon, so they don't bother.

But just be glad you get your "Teen Titans." Us Australian have yet to produce our own cartoon in at least 10 years, sci fi or over wise.

So, what's Disney up to these days?

Okay, to continue to bring things slightly more on-topic, what's the first Disney movie everyone remembers seeing in the theatre?

For me, it was Cinderella, which is why the movie has always had a special place in my heart.  I always wanted to be one of the mice, as a kid.

I think Cinderella may have also been the first movie I ever saw in the theatre.  It's certainly the first one I remember.
