Sometime between the invention of pyromania and the discovery of Beatlemania, the country suffered a frightening outbreak of Highway Mania. Accounts of the disorder are sketchy, but if the film Highway Mania is to be believed, it involved shaving your head, scarring your face with a good, strong liter or two of muriatic acid, and then climbing in your car and driving like Lizzy Grubman while—and this is very important, critical, even— cackling like a community theater actress in a bad production of Hansel and Gretel. While you did this a team of three different narrators described in purple prose the horrors you were visiting upon the land. You, however, remain singularly focused on your cackling. (Don't be too hard on yourself; highway mania is a disease, just like alcoholism or embezzling.) Somehow hurricanes and cruise ship sinkings are also involved and probably your fault.

Join Mike, Bill and Kevin as the catch the fever that is Highway Mania.

Will you be providing source audio at some point (for this one and the Back to School one)?

We started offering the source audios as a courtesy to the reauthorers in the group because - let's face it - the ducking on our shorts wasn't exactly the best. Since then, we've gotten a new system for ducking that works much better and the sound quality is pretty great. For that reason we're beginning to phase out the addition of source audio, which takes up additional space and time from our editing team.

I'd like to ask if you'd looked at the latest shorts, and if they're fine the way they are. If not, we can add the shorts audio for you, but we're trying to make it so that having additional source files is unnecessary in the future.

I think they sound Great plus it's less work on my end ;D

I vote to continue adding the source audio.  The ducking has improved considerably, but it's still not as good as I can do on my own.  I understand that it involves more work and time on your end to create the audio file, but I still prefer mixing my own audio.   Perhaps you could tell us where you got the source video(s) so that those of us who like to mix our own could possibly get the original video to use.  Just a suggestion.  Thanks for listening.  Oh, and keep those Shorts coming!!!!

The shorts are not available in the public domain, so we can't really "tell" you where we got them from. Would you mind describing your mixing process? It'd be interesting to compare notes.

Well I can't speak for everyone here but I will tell you what I do.

For shorts I usually find the Mixing pretty good, and the last few shorts have been very good imo maybe a few lines a little low but overall a very good mixing job.

For Traditional Rifftraxs I use Audacity import the movie audio and the Rifftrax audio. Sync them according to the Sync lines then use the Audio Ducking feature to lower the movie's audio. I find this works best, manually could take hours. I usually lower the movies audio around -13 dB depends on what kind of movie it is. I think this is a pretty common procedure with guides all over the forums.

This works pretty well for just about all the Rifftrax's that I have tried well except for Red Dawn, which was driving me nuts with Joel's low voice and the movie audio that was sooo quiet one scene and ear bleeding loud the next. I attempted to fiddle around with the audio settings in that one but still not happy with the results. I'll name my first born after the audio engineer that goes back and remixes that track :) Since its truly driving me insane  :gouge:

I'm curious now, how are the official releases mixed?

Why don't they look?

Looking hadn't been invented yet.

Sidechain compressor plugin, I believe. I'm not sure if it's for Vegas or Premiere, but that's generally how it's done. We did a lot of testing to find the right balance between leaving the source audio in, the release and the attack timing, etc., and Mike signed off on our final method. I have noticed that on cheaper speakers (like cheap computer speakers) it doesn't sound too great, but on regular systems they sound fantastic.

How did anyone survive those days?! I would have never left my house. Terrifying.  Hilarious as usual.

And I have a feeling MANY stuntmen died making this short.

Not to mention a spider monkey or two.

Ok, I just watched the last three shorts (Back to School, Highway Mania, and Bills of Rights) and I have to say that I'm still not happy with the audio mixing. I was really hoping that enough improvement had been made to save me some time doing my own editing, but I frankly don't notice much of a difference. The ducking is still WAY too significant and the riff audio is a bit low compared to the source audio (esp. for Back to School). Some ducking is great (MST3K did really well), but you guys practically silence the original.

Please continue to provide the source audio (unless I'm the only one complaining; in which case, to hell with me!).
