this was probably already brought up on another thread but could someone please explain WHY Hollywood feels it necessary to memory rape me?  First Footloose, Friday the 13th, and now this.

I'm telling you all right now if I hear anything about a remake to Monster Squad I will lose it completely.

Relaxing Dragon

I heard about the That Movie remake a while ago, along with the Robocop remake (though at leas Darren Aronofsky is doing the latter). Since I actually haven't seen much of either, I'm still fairly neutral on the subject.

EDIT: Huh, so that's what That Movie is. Been wondering about that for a while (I knew it wasn't Dune anymore, though).

Plastic Self-Cleaning Duck

Better a movie remake than a Broadway musical, I guess.

So... is it still going to be set during the Cold War, because I remember hearing them say they wanted to update it.

But that's nothing: They're remaking Plan 9.

Natalie Portman is going to star in the remake of "Suspiria".   :grr:
If you are going to say something dirty, say it clearly.

Gosh, how dare Hollywood take crappy Hollywood movies and make them into other crappy Hollwood movies. There is no other joy in my life than vaguely remembering bad movies fondly, the absurdity of which having nothing to do with constant cellphone radiation eroding my brain.

I don't hold Red Dawn in high enough esteem to actually be bothered that much by a remake.  I do wonder how it could be be pulled off without the Cold War.  I mean, the Cold War excuse was already kinda thin when Red Dawn came out.  Are they going to have Islamic religious extremists from Madeupistan parachuting in to conquer America?

Al Qaeda gets an air force that manages to once again fly into America completely undetected by an air defense force that, for whatever reason, decides to sit on it's hands and disregard long standing policy that they followed on every other occasion, except that one?!

Could never, ever happen.

But, we're not talking about a single attack.  It has to be a full scale invasion.  That means fleets of planes dropping paratroopers, landing parties, strategic bombings, etc.  It has to be Normandy on American soil and I just don't see how that scenario could work with any of our current enemies.

From what I've read, the Russians couldn't have done it in the 80s either.  Their government was practically bankrupt.  But yeah, they were probably the most "movie credible" threat to the US in the 80s.  The only enemies I can see them having for the remake is the Chinese, but that doesn't seem particularly sensitive, politically.

Why does it have to be a hugegantic invasion? It's a movie. It's likely going to take place in one city. Three, tops. Movies can't afford a lot of locations. They don't have to have every square foot of the U.S. invaded all at once. They also have to, you know, let the good guys win. Who cares. They can set it in a fictional country like Kings. They can have the "reds" be from Mars, and deny any knowledge of movies by Tim Burton or Stephen Spielberg. Or they can base it on the idea of a movie with a bunch of hot guys in it and call it Hot Guy Movie.

You're probably kidding but I agree.

Someone once asked me if I ever plan to see this Broadway take-off of Xanadu because I love the movie so much for it's cheese factor.

I told them that since I'd heard the cast album, I didn't think I wanted to because it sounded like it was good. And I don't want to see a good version of Xanadu.  I like my crappy movie.  It's fun like it is.

bratpop

Well, it depends on whether they change the title or not.

Turning an MST3k in-joke into the hot new Ewan McGregor movie = bad. But if you change the title from Parts: The Clonus Horror to The Island: The Michael Bay Horror, it doesn't ruin it because no one sees the movie anyway.

It's like The Punisher. If I want to talk about The Punisher, I want to talk about the cheesy Dolph Lundgren movie, not the cheesy John Travolta movie. Now I have to explain which cheesy movie I'm talking about.
