Both Goldwave and the VoiceOver plugin have full featured evaluation versions, it's an X number of uses demo, I have been using both for quite a while.

I too would like to see a FAQ on this... my next PC will have a DVD burner (right now all I have is a stand-alone component which will not dupe store-bought DVDs).  It would certainly be preferable to create the sync track once and be able to watch it hassle-free in the future!

Any suggestions on the best re-authoring software? I seem to remember one that was taken off the market a while back, a guy right here in St. Louis came up with it.

Actually, the more I think about it the less important it is to me that the film itself is of "DVD" quality... as far as I'm concerned, the video is secondary to the rifftrax. I think the easiest solution (for me at least) is to simply use the Rifftrax player running full-screen and feed the PC output into the DVD recorder... not the highest quality video but really, it can't be much worse than my 10-14 year-old MST3K VHS tapes...

That Rifftrax player is tricky to get synced up...

I know he said he was setting it aside, but it's such a great concept... hopefully someone will continue to work on it  8)

have you tried Sharecrow? It's what I used before I started reauthoring, how does it compare?

BEERxTaco

I have not tried it, I suppose I need to investigate all my options... like I said I could live with the (relatively) poor video quality that comes from recording a DVD from the s-video output of my PC, if I could easily get the sync started for a full-screen showing.

I wonder how hard it would be to write a plug-in for Goldwave or Audacity, that did the mixing automatically, with say the data from the readme.

I reauthor mine and have from the first.  The only real problem I had was the two-part riff for LOTR.  I eventually figured it out.   It was a pain though.

The best way I like to view Rifftrax is to put the friction decal of the MST3K silhouettes on my PC screen and pretend I'm hear Mike and the Bots riffing the movie.

Is it weird to hear the Safety Dance in my head watching Game of Thrones?

lol fair enough...  ;)

But how do you mix the Audio is the question.

Gammer's guide is what got me started on correctly re-authoring DVD to include rifftrax.  If you're unsure on how to re-author, that's the place to start!

These days I usually create re-authored AVI's, which I can stream from my PC to the Xbox onto the beamer :)
- Rip and convert to AVI using WinAVI
- Extract the audio as AC3 using AviDemux
- Add the rifftrax voiceover using Goldwave, as per Gammer's instructions
- Convert audio to AC3 using ffmpeggui
- Merge the rifftrax audio with the AVI video using VirtualDubMod

I'm about to put on the "Reign of Fire" rifftrax while drinking Grolsch and stuffing my face with naan.  Life is good! :)

Actually, I've been wondering about that friction decal myself... basically what size is it? Does it reach a pc screen in length, if so then it will look pretty silly on my tv screen... then again I'll probably still order it despite the size.

Also this might be a dumb question but I'm guessing that it has to be the traditional pc screen right? ... I have two LCD monitors, nothing old school :(

I re-author (granted, I started this past weekend, but still...). The hardest part is syncing up the RiffTrax to the movie soundtrack, but with my prior experience using Goldwave to do editing stuff, that's no problem for me at all. I also burn to DVD-RW first, with Disembaudio's lines intact, so I can check the quality of the sync throughout. If everything's good, I go back, mute Dis's lines (SUPER easy in Goldwave), mix again and burn the final DVD-R.

Since reauthoring is beyond my computer's capacity and my capabilities I play the DVD with the DVD player app, but of course I can't open itunes if I have the dvd going, so I open the rifftrax in realaudio.
It works pretty good.  I'm always amazed when Disembaudio and the character speak at the same time.

Though when one is off, I have a really difficult time figuring out which one it is...Or which one to pause....I know that sounds stupid....I always end up pausing the wrong one and getting it even more off sync.

Naw, I don't think its that much different than syncing it with your computer and tv... if the movie dialogue is before the riff pause the movie, if the movie dialogue is behind the riff pause the trax... your were probably just complaining though... all us normals are jealous of the dvd reauthorers :)
