M. Knight McShyamallammanamascammallayan, the Ed Wood of the 21st Century

That's a little harsh.  Ed Wood never made a halfway decent movie, and all his movies had laughably terrible production values.  M Night had a few highly acclaimed movies and all his movies are at least visually appealing.

I think Uwe Boll is closer to the modern day Ed Wood.

The death of the kids (SPOILER, I guess?) was unsettling, but it felt absolutely gratuitous. It didn't do anything for the plot. It felt pointlessly tragic and yet somehow comic. Kind of a microcosm for the whole movie.

Those kids were nothing but plot-meat, and the movie disposed of them with a callousness that, if intentional, shows a pretty cynical disregard for its own characters or, if unintentional, bespeaks some REALLY ham-fisted writing.
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere.
Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."
