Subtitles - Recommended DVD Decrypter Settings and Workflow

Using the excellent guides posted or linked to in this forum, I've successfully authored a couple of riffed DVDs.  Sadly, I'm hung up on one point: subtitles.  Can anyone recommend the proper DVD Decrypter settings and/or the right software to create usable .sup or .srt files for authoring in IFOEdit or GUI for DVDAuthor?

I'm not looking to do anything fancy; no color changes, position adjustments, etc.  I just want to duplicate the exact subtitles from the original DVD using the most straightforward workflow possible.

Unfortunately, subtitles are extremely difficult to work with.  I don't know what DVD Decrypter rips from subtitle streams but i'm pretty convinced that its not usable.  However I have recently figured out how to get them to work properly.  I can do a write up in a bit.
