Another Lord of the Rings Riff
« on: November 22, 2006, 01:39:10 PM »
I came across this text and picture based riff of Lord of the Rings a while ago and found it to be one of the funniest things I ever read, and thought I would share it on the boards here. It not the Peter Jackson version though. Its the cheesy 70s animated version.

Anyway, here is the link:

Yep, me too. Big fan of the director as well. Hope there will come a day when the studios let him finish the story. That would be cool. 8)

I read Sean Astin's book...he said that he had never red LOTR before. After he was hired he watched that version to see what sam was like.

Sam is such a bufoon in that version that Astin started having some serious doubts about doing the movie...even felt like crying a little.    ::)

I like that movie too. I can't help but giggle a bit toward the end when you can really see the money running out of the production.

I don't think that Sam was played off as a buffoon in Bakshi's movie. I thought that the portrayal was true to the books, even if the character design was a little ugly.

I can't help but giggle a bit toward the end when you can really see the money running out of the production.

When the live-action mixes with the animation, I think it was just Bakshi being experimental, not running out of money. Back in those days, he was trying different things, and found the results interesting, as do I. He's supposed to be a big Jean-Luc Godard fan, I think he tried to do something similar in animation to what Godard did with live-action.

Of course, nowadays, he regrets the decision and says that if he returns to LOTR, he won't ever use rotoscoping, but I like what he did with the various techniques on that film.

Oh I didn't mean the rotoscoping and live action elements...I really liked that.

I'm talking about Helm's Deep...

they start to minimize the frames...and there a re characters fighting by standing perfectly still and only their sword or spears are moving around.

They did run out of money and had to end it early...and at the end, it shows a bit.

I want to mention again that I do like the movie. I own it, and watch it on occasion.

That version was the most terrible Lord Of The Rings related thing I've ever seen.  It was shorter than any of Peter Jackson's LOTR movies individually, yet it felt about 58 hours long.  Plus, the music was composed by Leonard Rosenman, who composed the music for Star Trek IV.  And if somehow got the music from both soundtracks on CD and ripped them onto your computer and made a playlist out of both of them, and played it on shuffle, you would be hard-pressed to tell which track came from which film.  The only hint would be that occasionally one of the tracks would use Alexander Courage's Star Trek theme, but even then you couldn't be sure, because I'm pretty sure there's some music in Leonard Rosenman's LOTR score that sounds like the Star Trek theme.  Now if you want to see a good LOTR related animated production, go for the Rankin/Baas version of the Hobbit.  It's a fairly faithful adaptation, and it's actually got one or two catchy songs.  And until Ian McKellan played him in the Peter Jackson movies, Gandalf always sounded like John Huston when I imagined his voice in my head.

Spot on satire. I dig the animated version. Hell, I saw it in the theater way back when. It charm is its cheesey attempt at a straight telling of Tolkien's classic saga. BTW-doesn't Galadriel remind you of a 70's porn starlet?
