Converting .MOV to MP4?
« on: May 29, 2008, 04:11:45 PM »
I've downloaded the Divx and MOV versions.

Is it possible to change the MOV format to MP4 so it can play on an ipod?    Is it as simple as just renaming it and calling the extension ".mp4"?

Thanks.

Hmmm, all that did was corrupt the file ("a bad public movie atom was found in the movie").

WTH?

Try this program. I use it to turn Xvid files to Ipod mp4s:

I've also used the Videora converter for different types of files, works well, and faster than iTunes.  It has lots of options, you can make the files with high enough resolution that they look good if you connect your iPod to a TV, or make them lower rez just for the iPod screen.

You can use iTunes to convert the file, but every time I've used it on .mov or .avi files it seems to take way too long.

I got lazy and just burned the Divx version to DVD so I can watch it that way!

There's a free program I found called iSquint that does the trick nicely.  A google search should get you going.

Are you using a Mac or PC?

Quicktime has a very easy export feature, but I haven't done it on my PC.

If you do a search, there are a bunch of free programs for the PC that convert from any file type to iPod.

I calculated the odds of this succeeding versus the odds of me doing something incredibly stupid, and I went ahead anyway.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

I am using a PC and I probably will download those programs so I can take a movie that I own and covert to MP4 format for traveling.

For this episode, especially since the commentary could not be pre-mixed into the download, the divx version is fine.

I still love the wording of the error message I am getting......("a bad public movie atom was found in the movie").....   So, my PC looks at things at the ATOMIC level?    Damn, this Toshiba laptop rules.
