Meh...I don't really hear it.  Mind you, I'm not a U2 fan by any means.  But they're different enough for it to be a coincidence.  Besides, it's not like there was that much of a melody to steal.  The vocals aren't really the point of the song.  They're both kinda chanted Subterranean-Homesick-Blues-style.

Honestly, I'd say "Get on Your Boots" is more guilty of sounding too much like a rehash of "Vertigo" than it is of sounding like "Pump It Up."

Much as I like Elvis, I don't really care whether U2 ripped him off or not. I don't even care to find out. Bunch of wankers, go make your stupid Spider-Man musical and then fade into obscurity like you're supposed to. Music is less fun when nobody ever goes away.

Well, Costello's song is good, and U2's song isn't, so there's a difference right there.

Yeah, that, too.

Playing the two songs back-to-back, there's a few places where a few seconds of U2's song sounds similar to seconds out of the Elvis song.  If you weren't waving a flag about it, I wouldn't have even noticed.

This does not compare to the legal analysis which caused George to lose the lawsuit against him.  See:

I'd say the Elvis song is a better song, but then I bought that album when it came out and have had 30-something years of listening to it.  I've only heard the U2 song about four or five times.

Here is were a wise-ass would insert the Ceilon Dione video of her and some other woman singing AC/DC's "Shooke Me All Night Long".

Thank goodness we have no such wise-ass.

Copyright infringement suits are basically bullshit, even on the rare occasion somebody INTENTIONALLY rips someone else off. The judicial system can't understand art. Law is as different to art as math is. The problem is, law as art is subjective as far as right/wrong good/bad, but they set up rules to pretend that it's black and white when it isn't. I don't think Harrison owed the Chiffons jack shit, because people liked his song for completely different reasons than they liked the Chiffons' song. They both made money off the same chord progression, but in totally opposite contexts. You don't get a fucking Hari Krishna vibe from "He's So Fine." I'm all for deriding somebody for ripping off a song, namely if theirs is worse - for the record, I think Elastica's "Connection" is an improvement on Wire's throwaway "Three Girl Rhumba" - but some self righteous judge declaring that you can copyright as little as three notes and lose a case because of the same notes appearing in two songs is an idiot who doesn't understand how music works. It's like Star Wars suing every movie that has space, heroes, and villains in it because they own those three elements.

If you weren't REQUIRED to rip people off in music, there would only be one performer per genre, and all music would have been given up after about ten years.

Costello also manages to avoid being a gigantic wanker, U2 not so much.

Aww it does my heart good to see so much dislike of U2.

Carry on!

You stand in front of mirrors and repeat the words "Bloody Mary" all the time don't you?

This does not compare to the legal analysis which caused George to lose the lawsuit against him.

Long time ago, a radio comedy service did a version of "He's So Fine" that was a dead ringer of the musical arrangement of "My Sweet Lord" - it ended with a riff from the song "He Don't Love You (Like I Love You)"

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/3lvBfs7DoLI&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/3lvBfs7DoLI&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1</a>

The point being that if you're going to get that picky....but there probably wasn't enough to sue for in the case of this other song...
