Okay, with the obligatory fat joke out the way I have to say that I think Island showcases Brando's range.  From the jibbering insanity of wearing an ice bucket on his head to scenes where he did very well playing it straight like where his children have invaded his home to kill him and he treats them in a fatherly fashion at first.  The fact that he could play a scene like that naturally against a bunch of people in funny animal costumes shows that he did have some talent left.  Too bad the bulk of his performance was distorted behind drab exposition scenes, freakish costuming, and directionless direction.

The main problem with Brando is that if he wasn't interested in the role, or have a good director, he would be pretty hard to control.  You're right that he brings a touch of humanity - perhaps even innocence - to the role, though whenever he's on screen, that little pink thing is with him, which completely creeps me out.

Think of this way, if absolute power corrupts absolutely, being told you're the world's greatest actor drives you batshit insane.
