The New Indiana Jones Movie...Over?
« on: November 09, 2006, 05:23:58 AM »
From the imdb:

"The latest effort to bring back Indiana Jones appears doomed, according to writer-director Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption). Darabont told a movie website that focuses on films in development that although Steven Spielberg had praised his script for Indiana Jones 4 as "the best draft of anything since Raiders of the Lost Ark, " his excitement was not shared by fellow producer George Lucas. In the interview with Devin Faraci of CHUD.com, Darabont said Spielberg's praise "gave me a real sense of accomplishment, especially when you love the material you're working on as much as I love the Indiana Jones films. And then you have George Lucas read it and say, 'Yeah, I don't think so, I don't like it.' And then he resets it to zero." Asked whether he believes Indy 4 will ever be filmed, Darabont replied, "I don't think so. ... I just think it's fantastically bizarre that for a project that people have been trying to crack for ten years and have a writer come in and finally crack it and then ... [for Lucas to] say, 'No, I don't think so...' It's just bizarre to me. I can't get into George's head."

It seems like Lucas doesn't actually want a fourth Indy movie...

Why doesn't the lazy bastard write it himself then?  ::)

I say let it die.  I didn't even like the first ones very much, and I don't think there's any possible way a modern day sequel involving Spielberg or Lucas could be any good.

The script supposedly dealt with Indy fighting alien monsters at Roswell so I think maybe some of the GL bashers should give the man some credit here?finally he's trying to keep your childhoods from being raped!

At this stage in the game a fourth Indy movie could be a really bad idea.

Yeah, but that's old news, because they rejected Frank Darabont's script ages ago.  David Koepp is working on the screenplay now.  The only thing Ford, Spielberg, and Lucas have said in recent interviews is that they're going to do it.  If they had decided they weren't going to move forward with the project, they'd have said so themselves rather than letting a screenwriter who's not even working on the project anymore say it.

Yes!  And instead of having action on the screen, Indy can just talk about it for hours on end!  Brilliant!  And all the bad guys can have incredibly racist Mexican accents!

A fourth installment of Indiana Jones would seem to be the holy grail of adventure films.  But considering the reaction to the first two Star Wars prequels, the overriding arc of the convenant between viewers and director/producer Lucas is that the relationship has become strained.  Of course some who hold Lucas' work sacred stone those who dare question it, but those cult member type of fans have diminished in number.

Can George Lucas ever win?

He makes the prequels and is accused of merely cashing in on a franchise.

Then he shuts down Indy 4 (which would make half a billion right out of the gate) thus
preserving your precious childhood Indiana Jones memories and he's villified.

Either way GL still owns all of your fanboy behinds and his body of work
is the reason why probably 90% of you even like movies in the first place.

The End.

My post above was not intended to be read literally.  I only regret that the Cross of Coronado can't be more easily worked into conversation.

Well - from what we have heard on this end - Indy 4 is going to happen, and this last person they have hired to do the screenplay is working very closely with both Lucas and Spielberg to get the right movie on paper.

Spielberg is probably just less critical of the screenplay that is decided upon because he didn't have to go through the Star Wars Prequel slandering that Lucas went through. Lucas is probably bing as careful as history has taught him to be in this situation.

I really want another Indy to be made so that adventure can turn back toward good-ol' American cowboyism, and away from DaVinci Code consipracy type of stuff. I can see trailers for Indy 4 making people hold their breaths and grip their chairs in the near future.... And the thoguht is rather pleasing ;)

There are still prospects that Natalie Portman, Sean Conenry, and Karen Allen will be the three costars, along with Jon-Ryys Davis as Sala. Here's hoping - I think Spielberg will be the right kind of check/balance to make Lucas' vision come true in a way that stays completely faithful to old-school Indy.
