Are there any riffs you wouldn't watch?
« on: December 07, 2007, 12:44:48 AM »
Ok, I'm not going to say some movies should not be riffed, (Tho I have to say that I can't imagine anyone who wasn't a skinhead riffing "Schindler's list and would bet mike and co. never would in a trillion years.) but I will say there are a few movies that, if riffed, I wouldn't watch the riffing of for personal choice reasons.

I like "2001" too much to see it riffed.

Likewise I don't think I'd watch a riff of "dark city" because I like it a lot.

Anyone else have movies they would not watch riffs of?

I honestly can't think of a single movie that I wouldn't watch with a Rifftrax.  Even if they mocked my all time favorite film, one that I was emotionally attached to from childhood, one I consider high art, I don't take Rifftrax seriously enough to be offended at their choice of target.

I probably wouldn't watch a Rifftrax of a movie like "Schlinder's List" just because I don't feel the topic is laughable.  All of my favorite movies are fair game though.

I probably won't be able to watch the Star Wars Holiday Special.  I still haven't been able to finish Battlefield Earth, but movies that are so bad that even Mike can't save them is a different topic.

But you're an MST3k vet! Surely you've suffered through many such films.  Or is it knowing that the film is irredeemably awful that puts you off? :)

As for me, I think I could probably watch any Riff the guys do, and I don't they'd ever do one in poor enough taste for me to consider not watching it.

You make a good point with "Schindler's List" but Mike and Co would never riff that or a similar movie anyway, so it's not really that important to consider as far as I can see.

As with the painfully bad stuff, hell counting this week I've watched the Star Wars Holiday Special three or four times unriffed, I also willingly watched Battlefield Earth before Rifftrax even existed out of curiosity of how bad it is, I regularly watch the Manos MST3K episode...I guess you can call me a movie masochist or something, if it's really that painful I just enjoy it on a different level that I would a good movie, and if it's not being mocked by the professionals at the time I'll mock it myself.

I still haven't been able to finish Battlefield Earth

I watched part of it for the first time the other night with RiffTrax.  I've never seen it unriffed, and I fell asleep halfway through.  Apparently even RiffTrax can't make that movie watchable.

I'm not going to watch the Harry Potter RiffTrax.  Not because I'm emotionally attached to the series, and not because I don't want RiffTrax to "ruin" a decent movie for me.  I boycotted the Harry Potter movies in general after the third one gave me a migraine when I went to see it in the theaters.  I might have to make an exception and watch the fanriff once or twice, but I'm not looking to purchase the Harry Potter RiffTrax anytime soon.

And I wouldn't watch a riff of a political/social documentary.  Mock Michael Moore and Morgan Spurlock and the like all you want in a RiffTrax of a film, but I wouldn't want to see RiffTrax suddenly pick up a political edge.

You've mentioned this before, Dim, and I'm curious: are you using the term "headache" metaphorically (to express your dissatisfaction with the films), or do you mean it gave you an actual headache?

I agree; political jokes here and there can be funny ("It's Al Franken's first day in office!"), but a whole Riff of that would get old fast.

The latter one.  I walked out of the theater almost crying in pain because it felt like my left eyeball was in a vise grip, and I was out of commission for the night and the next day, as well.  Maybe the movie wasn't the direct cause of the headache, but it sure as hell exacerbated it.  Stupid patronus....

Harry Potter and the Movie Without Suspense, aka Harry Potter 3. Yeah, that was a headache.
