I also heard that bats eat Mosquitoes, but don't believe it. Most mosquitoes are very small, too small for bats to care about. Probably even too small to be able to catch. They seem to go after larger insects like Chinese beetles or moths.
Ah but bug-zappers provide plenty of good'ol redneck entertainment.
If you want some real backyard entertainment, watch when the neighbors bring their young children outside to catch fireflies during a bat swarm. You see happy five year old kids running up to catch a flashing firefly when
SWOOSH, a bat flies right in front of them and snatches the firefly inches from their hands. The kid lets out a scream, and the parents act like there are vampires in the neighborhood and evacuate all their children back into the house. I saw this happen once to a family next door, then a couple of days later another family had a barbecue with children and I decided to watch to see if it would happen again. And sure enough, a bat encounter happened after only a few minutes of the firefly hunt.
Probably the best entertainment would be if a bat got tangled in the hair of one of the neighborhood women, but it turns out that is just a myth. Bats are good at avoiding collisions, and the only time one would land in someone's hair would be if it had rabies. Just like when this happened:
