I thought that the Briefcasing class I took was helpful.

So I saw Swan Lake last night.  I thought it was fine, beautiful even, but if I had to sum up what I'd seen in a totally flip way, it'd be "butt cracks, ball sacks, and skinny women."

Doesn't a viewing of Swan Lake bring how how completely stupid the premise of Black Swan is?

So today I have for hours of alternately playing a Wiley yet fopish pickpocket and a simpleton (going about  Ā¾retreats on that one) and then flamenco and jazz on one of the highest roof plazas in Detroit with grilled fish, sparkling wine and about a dozen different sherries.

I saw someone with a Jeff Dunham bumper sticker on my way to work today.  I guess I found the one guy who's actually a fan.  Wait....it could have been Jeff Dunham driving the car....

I don't get the hate for Jeff Dunham.  Of course I also wouldn't understand being a huge fan either.  He's a good ventriloquist, has there ever been a really hilarious one of those?  It's perfectly fine generic entertainment, good for a few chuckles.

I have a really hard time with people using silly voices to do the bulk of the work in their comedy.

For example:

There is a local comedy theatre that runsa clases for people to learn improv, which is fine and all, it's a confidence booster and shit like that and those that sign up for the classes are people with tedious office jobs and no creative outlet mostly. But dear god the student shows, most of the participants seem to think comedy comes down to two things:

1: "Funny" voices
2: Shrieking.

The worst is when some of them turn up at the open competitions run by other venues for improv troops. Like this weekend it was the final of a week long competition for improv troops with the winners from the previous nights competing. Now some were good because they were made up of people with both talent and training while others were, well see the bullet list above. That those folks had made it to the final makes me thank Dionysus that rehearsals had kept me from attending the prelims.

yes and hitting themselves.

Improve is hard, and I have so much respect and admiration for those who can do it, which is why I love the Comedy Bang Bang podcast so much.  I also have respect for people who realize they can't do improve and so therefore don't get up on stage and do it.

Yeah, took an acting class in college and it was all about improv. What did I learn? I can't do it, that's what.

As Drew Carrey said on Whose Line Is It Anyway, "and to those of you who keep sending us videotapes showing off your improv skills...  Please stop."

I can imagine.  Although it has to be said, Drew was never very good at improv himself on Whose Line.

Actually, he wasn't that good of a host, either.  Clive Anderson was much funnier.
