Ah, that explains it.  Though considering how weird and controversial ads tend to get, it wouldn't have surprised me too much if it was  completely real.  Spec?

"We at Soulless, Glib and Partners Advertising Agency have created this ad for your product. We think it shows what your company stands for and what our company can do for your product. Fancy giving us a boat load of cash now?"

Although, rereading the article it might not even be that, it might be that Kia Brasil had them on retainer and had preauthorised them to produce ads without approval being needed for each individual spot.

KIA is disavowing the ads, saying they were not approved.

From what I understand they were not used in an ad campaign, but were presented at an advertizing festival in Cannes, and actually won some award(s?).  If that's true it's even more fucked up...

I think that this may be a statement that is technically true on KIA's part....

Then we're back to them being spec, but I don't know how the Cannes advertising festival works, most advertising festivals use campaigns that are actually running in some form or other.

A line from my business textbook:

"In fact, people who have a sedentary lifestyle had a 46 percent higher risk of death from all causes over people living a more active lifestyle."

Is it just me, or does the sentence construction make it sound like they're saying that sedentary people have a 46 percent higher chance of dying?  Which can't be right because everyone has the same 100% chance of dying regardless of lifestyle.  Maybe fat people have a 146% chance of dying.

This from KIA:

Quote
Kia Motors America (KMA) has become aware of an offensive piece of advertising material that was created by an ad agency in Brazil that KMA has no business relationship with and has never worked with. This ad was not created in the U.S. by Kia Motors America or any of its marketing partners and does not reflect the opinions or values of KMA or Kia Motors Corporation. The ad is undoubtedly inappropriate, and on behalf of Kia Motors we apologize to those who have been offended by it. We can guarantee this advertisement has never and will never be used in any form in the United States, and our global headquarters in Seoul, South Korea is addressing the issue with the independent Brazilian distributor.

Reading between the lines it seems the distributor for KIA in Brazil probably contracted the agency to make the ads.  Still no idea if they actually ran anywhere, the ad festival is saying the agency broke the rules by submitting work that wasn't approved.

Yes I think they had an agreement with the agency to produce ads but weren't monitoring them all that closely, it happens.

And is it just me, or are mind maps the stupidest fucking thing ever?  They seem to be one of those things that is touted as a way to enhance communication, but what they really do is add nothing at best and obfuscate and waste time at worst.

Depending on where they take it, that's a pretty good rate.

All I can think of is Darrell Hammond in his Sean Connery costume laughing after saying that.
