The weaker sex
« on: October 18, 2007, 05:43:53 AM »
I've been noticing a curious phenomenon in this forum.

Some of you know I have a huge phobia about horror movies, even the ones that are tame by most people's standards. Yet I've forced myself to sit through horror movies for RiffTrax's sake.

However, it seems that some of our men here are just now hearing Bridget riff for the first time, because they couldn't bring themselves to sit through a chick show for RiffTrax's sake.

Now I ask you, boys and girls . . . who's really the weaker sex?  ;)

I say, thank god for the anonymity of Netflix. Because there was no way I, as a male, would have been caught dead renting Grey's Anatomy. I would have had to send in my Mom to rent it for me while I sat outside in the car.
But rent it I did and watched by myself making sure none of my other male friends where around at the time. But I did enjoy that riff and also "Next". I do hope Bridget does some more riffs just to get a female voice there occasionally. Maybe mix up the group every once and awhile, say some riffs with Mike, Kevin, and Bridget and then some with Mike, Bill, and Bridget.

I had no qualms about getting and watching Grey's Anatomy, I had seen it a few times before when the girlfriend was watching it.  While I think it's silly and overly-melodramatic, it's by no means unwatchable.  And Bridget was an awesome riffer.  You're going to get complaints about every single rifftrax movie selection; it's too violent, it's too chick flick-y, it's too good a movie, it's too bad a movie, etc.  I just buy all of 'em and not worry about it.

Maybe mix up the group every once and awhile, say some riffs with Mike, Kevin, and Bridget and then some with Mike, Bill, and Bridget.

I like that idea very much.

I actually went into the video store to rent Crossroads, Glitter, and Grey's Anatomy.  I had to ask the person at the counter to help me find Glitter, thus drawing further attention to my less-than-masculine viewing choice.  (It was filed under "comedy" for some reason.)  Like true video store professionals, their faces and tones betrayed no hint of derision.  Either they were saving up to mock me to their coworkers after I departed, or they just don't give a crap what I choose to rent.  I suspect the latter.  And if it's the former, well, they're all at least a dozen years younger than I am.  I can't go through life worrying about what the punk little video store hipsters think of me.

Ditto. I used it as an opportunity to tell the clerk about RiffTrax.
Trust me, the clerks and the video stores have seen weirder things.

I like chick flicks.  Sometimes they can be horrendous, but on the whole, I've enjoyed a lot of 'em.  Even ones starring Hugh Grant.

What do you mean "for some reason"? That makes perfect sense!

So I'm the weaker sex because it would take either a Rifftrax or cattle prod to get me to watch chick flick crap? No way. The weaker sex are the ones who thinks this s#@% is good. And you know there are some girls who liked this movie.

meh, most can be horrendous, but I've enjoyed several romantic comedies. The only Hugh Grant movie that I can say I 'loved' was About a Boy, great film.
(Also, I've been known to enjoy a Fred Astaire movie from time to time ;D )

If we're talking about unintentional comedies, it would make sense, but Steven Seagal's On Deadly Ground was still filed under "action"...

If I ever ran across a video store with an "unintentional comedy" section, I would frequent it often.

I haven't had time to watch "next" yet.  Is this a chick flick.  If not I was curious why this discussion started here?  Or is it a chicktrax because Bridget is riffing?

As someone who's worked in a video store, all I can say is you never know.  Since I was a MST3K fan for so many years, anytime I saw someone renting anything that seemed "out of place" for them (like a guy renting a total chick flick or anyone renting Jason X), I told myself they could just like making fun of it.

Though I have to say the weirdest one was the black man who asked for Birth of a Nation.  I tried to be helpful, looked it up in our system and unsurprisingly found Blockbuster wouldn't carry it at all, and suggested a couple stores in the area or the local library.  Best thing I could come up with was he was teaching a class and wanted to show an example of racist propoganda.  Or he could have been related to the blind black KKK leader from Chapelle Show.

I don't mean to sound sexist but I've never really found female comedians to be at the same level of funniness as male comedians.

no offence Bridget

The fact that female comedians are highly out numbered might have something to do with it.  I've only seen a few female comedians that I like but I've seen probably an equal number of male comedians that I hate to the number of females I don't like.  That being said Sarah Silverman is easily in my top ten.

I know you were half joking. But as a film student, i just have to chime in to say that Birth Of A Nation is a landmark in film history... especially for editors. To dismiss it as being only useful as a piece racist propaganda is pretty far off the mark.
