A Song You Hate By a Band/Musician You Love...

They can't all be gems, right?

20+ years later I still have a soft spot in my heart and head for Marillion*. Their style is certainly nothing like it was in the 80s (the past few CDs sound like they're trying to out-Coldplay Coldplay) but damned if I still don't buy their stuff and listen to it more than almost anything else by anyone else.

That having been said, the first single they tried to release with current lead vocalist Steve Hogarth, "Hooks In You," sounds like the lamest Cinderellapoisongreatwhiteskidrowjackyl barn-burner-wannabe song I've ever heard, and I'm from Jersey, so I've heard many.

I hang my head in shame that I know who Marillion are.

Must be something to do with being a fellow Jersey refugee.  :)

On the other hand, maybe that was a smart move by the band.  After all, long time fans were guaranteed to hate the first non-Fish material anyway.  If you're going to be hanged for horse thievery, might as well have actually stolen a horse first.

Well, I have to say that I'm not very fond of the new stuff by the Finnish group Nightwish ever since they booted Tarja Turunen in favor of that shrill voiced pop diva Anette Olzon. Yes, she might be attractive to the guys, but her voice sucks compared to Tarja's.

Is it weird to hear the Safety Dance in my head watching Game of Thrones?

Well, I might as well come upfront and say right now that My Chemical Romance is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine.  (Hey, it's no worse than admitting to watching Batman and Robin repeatedly when I was younger!)  Something in their music seems perfect for some little moods that I tend to sink into when things in my life become less than satisfactory.  However, I cannot and will not listen to the song entitled "Cancer."  It just hits a chord with me that makes it intolerable to listen to.

Also: U2's Vertigo.  It just got old.

I used to like Korn... I used to like them alot. Pretty much anything since Issues counts as something I hate, but does that mean I don't love them anymore and thus they don't count?

Closer - Nine Inch Nails: Heard it!  Come up with something better, Trent.
Hurt - Nine Inch Nails: Come on, Trent, toughen up, take it like a man, you whiny bitch.
Te Quiero Puta - Rammstein: This song is so elementary for their talents.
Sweet Dreams - Marilyn Manson: Marilyn Manson is a hypocritical fruitloop.  His first album is a good listen (every five years or so).  Everything after that was commercial "I hate God" fodder just to get a rise out of society.
Shitlist - L7: Come on, girls.  Why all the anger?

I'd have to say "Closer" by NIN. I can't play that song around my Mom and it makes me angry.

Okay, outside of 7 or 8 songs they've done, I don't much like Led Zeppelin's output.  For example, Communication Breakdown, who the hell wants to listen to someone playing an Electric Guitar with a violin bow for 5 minutes? It might be great live, or when you're high, but it's just plain annoying otherwise.  It's a shame really, as I love those 7 or 8 songs.

Check out the "favorite albums" thread. I wrote about my view of Led Zeppelin there.

The basic thrust was: just get the 2-CD set containing all of Robert Johnson's recordings. You'll pretty closely approximate the output of Led Zeppelin (of course, Johnson's recordings were made before any of the members of the Zep were born).

Took me a while to think of one:

"Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Dean Martin. Deano, this song is a duet; having completely generic, anonymous background singers handling the female vocals is a REALLY BAD IDEA.

Oh and get the Willie Dixon two CD set from Chess to fill in any gaps.
