Reaper
« on: September 25, 2007, 10:33:44 PM »
Anyone catch the premiere for Reaper on the CW (or your friendly Canuckistanian equivalent)?

I had my doubts going in, because I read some lack-luster reviews, but this show pleasantly surprised me. It was quite entertaining. It's the only new show so far this season that I've actually enjoyed. The guy playing the Devil is fiendishly entertaining.

The only thing that really detracted from the show in my opinion was how hard "Sock" was trying to channel Jack Black for his performance. We get it... you're a hairy, fat clown. Tone it down a peg or two.

Good directing by Kevin Smith on this one, which just goes to show that he IS capable of being funny without resorting to filth (he just doesn't usually bother).

Don't worry, Tripe. It gets re-run Thursday.

I caught the pilot at a special preview showing at Dragon*Con earlier this month (where they gave away Dirt Devils as door prizes). Having re-watched it this morning with our roommate, I'm glad to see my initial positive view is still in place.

One funny thing: we were so far back in the room for the preview that I didn't realize Missy Peregrym was playing the love interest.  :b

I saw the unaired pilot when it was leaked and just saw the new one today.  I preferred Nikki Reed as the love interest in the unaired one, but I still like the show - Ray Wise is great as Satan, and I quite liked Sock, though I don't buy that he and the girl from the DA's office actually went out.

Cute episode the other night. I love the giant grin and thumbs-up from the Devil at the end. Interesting twist with the soul towards the end there, although not entirely unexpected.

I'm really enjoying the slightly campy fun of this show. Oh, and Socks? Still gross...

I like this show. It's kind of a Chuck with a supernatural slant to it. I even enjoyed the discount Jack Black character.

I thought Reaper was kind of fun, but also kind of a mess.

I would probably watch it again, if it just happened to be on, and I happened to be on the couch, and the kids happened to have hidden all of the
remotes again.  But I doubt I would seek it out purposefully.

Nice article Steve-O.  I saw the changes they made from pilot to pilot too.  I wonder if Kevin Smith was involved with those reshoots?

The one thing I'm a little worried about is that they've gone with exactly the same plot for three episodes now, with hardly any new information about any of the characters.

Nice article Steve-O.

Hey, thanks, Mr. B.

I saw the changes they made from pilot to pilot too.  I wonder if Kevin Smith was involved with those reshoots?

I don't recall seeing another credit for Director on the pilot, so I assume so.  If imagine union rules would require a credit.

The one thing I'm a little worried about is that they've gone with exactly the same plot for three episodes now, with hardly any new information about any of the characters.

I didn't catch the third episode, but I was a little surprised at the lack of development in the second one.  Usually, when freed from all of the stupid expectations of a pilot episode, the writers stretch out a little.  With Reaper, it was like watching the pilot two weeks in a row.
