Young Frankenstein vs. Spaceballs
« on: August 20, 2007, 05:05:29 AM »
My boyfriend and I have gotten into this debate a lot, which is funnier, Young Frankenstein or Spaceballs. His vote is for Spaceballs, while I think that Young Frankenstein is funnier. Help us settle once and for all which of these Mel Brook's parodies are better and post your reasons in this thread.

How is this a debate? I mean, I enjoy Spaceballs quite a bit, but I don't even see a contest here. Now, if it were Young Frankenstein versus Blazing Saddles, I could understand why there'd be competition.

Hmmm...bit tricky. There's no doubt in my mind that Young Frankenstein is the superior film but funnier, that's a very subjective thing. My vote still goes to Young Frankenstein but Spaceballs takes some beating when it comes to hilarious silliness.

"When does this happen in the movie?"
"Now. You're looking at now, sir. Everything that happens now, is happening now."
"What happened to then?"
"We passed then?"
"When?"
"Just now. We're at now, now."
"Go back to then."
"When?"
"Now."
"Now?"
"Now."
"I can't."
"Why?"
"We missed it."
"When?"
"Just now."
"When will then be now?"
"Soon."

I don't see any way to determine which is funnier, because we have two very different types of comedy. You have the smart, sophisticated comedy of Young Frankenstein, and you have the shock-value, low brow guffaws of Blazing Saddles. It completely depends on what type of comedy is your cup of tea. Personally, I find that Blazing Saddles is a billion times funnier than any Mel Brooks movie out there. But it's all the type of humor.

Young Frankenstein is the better movie by far, but I got more laughs out of Spaceballs, only because I like that kind of childish goofy humor. Plus, I'm somewhat of a Star Wars fan, so it hit home for me.

I didn't really find Young Frankenstein funny at all, so I'd certainly pick Spaceballs, for all its faults.  The Producers vs Blazing Saddles would produce more of a challenge for me though.

They're both funny, but Young Frankenstien is superior in every way. It's more enduring, as well. What decade did it come from? Who knows?

I'm going to have to go with Young Frankenstein, solely for the Marty Feldman factor.  And Gene Wilder didn't hurt at all, either.  Spaceballs did have its funny moments, and I did enjoy it, but I'm much more fond of Young Frankenstein.

But for the sake of sparking a massive flamewar... YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN IS TOTALLY BETTER THAN SPACEBALLS BY, LIKE, A LOT!  I mean, does Spaceballs have a musical coming out for it?  DOES IT?!!  Hmmmmmmm?!  Yeah, I didn't think so.

I'd definitely have to go with Young Frankenstein, not a huge fan of Spaceballs. Not particularly a fan of parody anymore. The Scary Movie series made my head hurt.

Who said anything about riffing? The OP was just asking which is a funnier comedy.

You'd have to be crazy, stupid, or both to try to riff a comedy because a good one is already set up to generate laughs on its own, and commenting on funny observations in a comedy is like commenting on scary observations in a horror movie - pretty useless ("NO! Don't go in there!").

Even Comedies from back then could use a little help..
I know neither will be Riff'd, but just the thought made them funnier to me! :D :D

I just think the only kind of comedy that can be riffed effectively is a very bad comedy; one that tries to be funny and just fails (like Hobgoblins, with its  many very weak attempts at humor, like the geeky boy who says he'll limp when he gets a fake ID that says he's a wounded veteran).

The senseless waste of pitting these two mighty forces of nature against each other, like matter vs. anti-matter, will be a tragedy, not only for the movies involved but for our planet. All nations must band together, to ensure that such a conflageration never takes place.

I never really thought to compare the two of them, but i have to go with Young Frankenstein.  Even when i was little and didn't understand all of the jokes, we always would watch it on Halloween with all the candy we got from our neighborhood.
