It's a minor nitpick, I suppose, but the concept in the novel is that everyone was obsessed with '80s pop culture. Things like Mechagodzilla, King Kong, Tomb Raider, and Iron Giant aren't '80s. Granted, they're things that '80s kids tend to love anyway, so like I said, it's a minor nitpick.

No, Halliday was obsessed with the '80s, so his competition is centered around it (but even then not exclusively, Iron Giant is an overlooked prize in the book), and hence the hunters having to be obsessed with it to win the tournament, but people loved everything even Parzival flies a Firefly class ship (in the book at least) as his main ship.

He had an X-Wing too, but he didn't really use it in the book. At least to my recollection he flew around with Max Headroom in the Firefly more often.

By the last third of the book, he was very rich in the Oasis, and had a base full of ships, including an
X Wing. I think he was flying it when some other players attacked in the Firefly class ship, so he took it from them.

I might be mixing things up though. For a long time last year, the audio version of this was my insomnia book. It was practically the only thing that could lull me to sleep when I was getting at best five hours a night. I would start it at a pretty much random point each time. Makes it hard to keep everything in order in my head.

That sounds about right, using the X-Wing to get the Firefly.

Dammit, just checked IMDB, Matt Frewer isn't in Ready Player One.

Max Headroom on Serenity was the #1 thing I wanted to see in the film.

I mostly want to see Acererak. I hope they don't cut that part. He sounded really cool.

I saw it on opening night and it largely lived up to the hype (and the trailer).  It's probably not worth a second viewing except on DVD to clinically pick out the references I missed because the action was too fast and dense.  Or to sync a good riff.

Every outlet I read agreed the opening weekend's box office ($41M - $53M) was successful, but it seems pretty poor against the budget ($175M, not including marketing).  It's doing better overseas (especially China), but they were touting the domestic numbers.  Maybe they expect it to have good word of mouth and long legs?

This is from someone who didn't read the book, BTW.
