And then were suddenly silenced when they realized that he's actually a good director.

Did we all decide we don't like Episode 7, now? Because I did not get that memo.

Yes because The Force Awakens was SUCH a disaster because it... oh wait, it has a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes! I'm pretty sure because of that Disney thought he could do another Star Wars film.

Yes, many people liked the Force Awakens, but if we get another movie just like the Force Awakens, that would suck. It's weird, but a big party of my enjoyment of TFA was, "this one was a rehash of old stuff and it was a safe choice to go with JJ, but the next ones are going to blow your mind with interesting directors. They just had to course correct with TFA after the prequels. Now we're in for some crazy stuff!"

I'm sure Abrams is aware he'll need to end things with a bang. He'll have to pick up from whatever The Last Jedi brings to the table, so he'll already be in new territory. Love him or hate him, he's not someone who likes to repeat himself. Cloverfield and 9 Cloverfield Lane are 2 very different movies, Star Trek was very different than Star Trek Beyond. We could still be in for some crazy stuff.

I'm sure Disney was a large part of why Force Awakens was so similar. Because they were so nervous about making sure the franchise was popular and it got the bad taste of the prequels out of our mouths. So it'll be more up to them how different they allow it to be, than JJ Abrams.

Isn't the quality of the story largely dependent on the screenwriting?  The director and the actors just breathe life into words.
I'm not particularly religious, and I don't really like Muppets, but I do love word play.

They are all important pieces that make up the whole.  Screenwriting is one of the ingredients, but the director is the chef.  Or maybe the screenwriting is the recipe, and the director is the oven?  The producers are the tomatoes.....I don't know.  I'm hungry.

The quality of the plot and the dialogue is. The tone is largely up to the director.

I'm curious IM, would you have preferred Trevorrow?
