Remember when people thought French was a romance language?  Glad that trend hasn't passed ;)

I really enjoy speaking French, but since college has ended, haven't been able to use it in conversation.

I took Spanish. More useful to me as an American, I think. In Canada, I could see how French would be the better second language.

By the way, just curious, but has anyone here ever used the term "Freedom Fries" in a  non- ironic/spiteful/generally insulting manner? Like, seriously used it to describe fries?

I don't even think the originator of the term meant it seriously.

au contraire ...

http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/2006/01/the_three_conversions_of_walter_b_jones.html

"Rep. Walter B. Jones..........The courtly 62-year-old Republican represents North Carolina's flag-waving 3rd District, home to the U.S. Marine Corps' Camp Lejeune. He is known to his constituents as a staunchly conservative Christian, and known to the nation and the world for his insistence, back during the lead-up to war in 2003, that House cafeterias replace French fries on the menu with "freedom fries." He banished French toast, too. "A lot of us are very disappointed in the French attitude," Jones said then."

Not what I mean, I think he was serious in the action but the intent was still a sort of joke against the French.

A bit like the Hartlepool Monkey.

Well of course it was a joke.  It's like during WWI when everybody started calling sauerkraut victory cabbage or liberty cabbage, and hamburgers were called liberty sandwiches.  It was an allusion to previous patriotic wars.  Red meat for the masses.

But that's the point, Junkyard asked whether it was ever deadly serious, but it always had a satirical element to it.

It's deadly serious when a Representative of your government uses buffoonery to stir patriotic outrage to help take us to war.

But we are both right.

Oh yes it is that but sadly that's why politics is the profession you make the idiot child go into.

You know I liked this thread more when it was done in French :D
