About the end of the movie...
« on: April 06, 2007, 08:35:32 PM »
There's something that's always bothered me about the ending of X-Men.  Why does Magneto play chess with Xavier?  You know Xavier just reads his mind and cheats.

Xavier (voice-over): "Moving my queen looks like a good move..."
Magneto: Queen to "Queen takes knight."
Xavier: "Rook to King's Rook 8.  Checkmate.  Another game?  You could use the practice..."

Good point. I imagine Magneto's gotten pretty good at knowing when Xavier's poking around in his head. Plus, what fun would it really be to cheat at chess?

Xavier's a good and honorable guy.  I bet he refrains from giving himself an unfair advantage.

He'd cheat in a much more creative way, like trying to distract Magneto by making him imagine Xavier naked.

ill answer your question intelligently and logically if you first answer how is it possible for cyclops to miss something?  why is rogue in danger of getting hit?  JUST DONT LOOK AT HER DOOFUS!!!  its that simple, its not like you have to adjust for the wind when dealing with a laser.

Well they're really THICK lasers and he can't control how thick/powerful they are. He opens his eyes and it comes pouring out full force. The thickness of the beam would probably toast Rogue in the process of blowing away Magneto.

Well it's like if you have a rocket launcher, and there's a guy holding some girl hostage. You could be the best crack-shot in the world with that rocket launcher, but you'd probably end up hurting the girl in the process. :^)

except its NOT like a rocket launcher at all.  its a figgin laser beam (stop thinking your silly dr evil impersonation).  even given your big thick laser theory, if he just looks further to the right itd be ok.

OK. I don't have the X-Nerd cred to tackle this one. Who here knows whether Adamantium is harder than Vibranium? :^)

Adamantium is virtually indestructible - any impact will bounce off it. Vibranium, on the other hand, would absorb and redirect the same impact. So, they're equally strong but in different ways.

I am such a dork.

Now if I may trump your nerdiness:

While the vibration absorbing aspect of Wakandan Vibranium does make it tough it's material hardness is weaker.  Vibranium, for example, can be bent by your typcial strongman; only Thor and the Hulk have even dented Adamantium.

While it's hardness is not greater, Antarctic Vibranium has the property of reducing the hardness of other metals until they become liquid and has on at least one occasion caused Adamantium to melt (Avengers v2 #20 IIRC).

And Adamantium is theoretically weaker than the material in Captain America's shield which is ofter erroneously called Adamantium but is in fact an alloy of Wakandan Vibranium and another unknown material.  The shield was introduced in Captain America #2 way back in 1941 while Adamantium was invented after the foundation of the Avengers.  The official stance is that the shield is stronger than Adamantium.

Also, there not lasers, they're optic blasts, which is like some crazy concussive heat energy or something.  And he can control the level and intensity:

He can either make them thick or thicker on his own and his crazy visor can help change the size and intesity as well.  check out the knob on the size of his visor next time you watch.  It's not a volume button.
