LoC #63 - Submissions for Top 50 Songs from Movies
« on: August 13, 2012, 11:28:28 AM »
Fair warning: I have no idea what I'm doing.

Alright, since Monty was going to run this LoC but now will not be doing it, I'm going to try to make it happen, with Tripe backing me up on keyboards and possibly APGIL on drums (DB on tamborine or something). You should all know the rules by now, but I'm copying this from Compound's post for LoC #62:

Quote
You send me your Top 25 list of top tabletop games via PM.  I will compile all lists received into a master List.  Your list will be assigned points as follows:  25 points for your number 1, 24 points for your number 2, and so on until your number 25 gets one point.

If you don't submit a full list of 25, that is acceptable, but your choices will have fewer points.  A list of 10 entries will only have 10 points for 1st place.  And so on.

Got a question on whether or not something is allowed? Ask.

So the subject at hand is songs from movies, and I don't remember what rules Monty had before he deleted his post, so we'll just wing it here.

• Movies can be anything shown in the theater -- drama, comedies, musicals, documentaries, thriller, horror, and so on. Shorts may or may not be allowed? Opinions, please.
• It has to be a song with a name. Please do not submit a score.
• Please don't tell  me, "It's that song from Exorcist and I can't remember the name but I'll hum it for you" because that will literally kill me (even though I know the song from the Exorcist is "Tubular Bells"). Help a sister out and be specific with your entries.
• Partial songs are allowed (like the song was playing in the background of a scene, or on the radio as two characters are driving through the Arizona desert or whatever).

I believe Monty said we had until Monday, August 20 at midnight, so let's let that stand. People have already been working on their lists and it's easier for me to do all of this at work rather than the weekend.

I am excited about this list and can't wait to see it happen! It should be a large enough subject where we'll get some interesting entries.

Hmm... When you say scores don't count, I assume you mean scores in their entirety but musical pieces from a movie (like Tubular Bells) with a proper name do, right?

Not that it matters to me, since I don't think I'll include any musical pieces except one with vocals.  Maybe.

That is exactly what I mean. The entire score from Jaws wouldn't count, but if you said "The Theme from Jaws" then, yes, that would count.

Well, I've worked mine down to 35, very painful for me cutting some of these songs.

I now have no songs from Dirty Dancing on my list, who would have thought?
don't you try to tell me my tires aren't filled with water

Wait? hu? What happened?

(sorry, I'm often flumoxed by change ;)

Okay then, well there are some great non-lyrical things I could add, but I busted my can just trying to get it down to 25 tunes with words... so I guess I'll keep my list as is. (Though "Theme From Jaws" you were enjoyed)

And done, had to decide between a couple of hits of the '80s that play over a scene in a film I like despite it being set in a Michigan unlike anything in reality. I'll put it in the spreadsheet this morning. :)

And done. :)

Hmm. How to make that critical decision:

I like the songs from X movie, but I can't really stand X movie. Does that mean I rank it higher, since that must mean that the song is good enough to transcend the movie, or lower, since that means I'm voting for it as a song, but not really as a song from a movie?

My 25th pick is on there because it's probably the best, well certainly best known (maybe second best known, but both songs are about equal), in a movie I love but which would have been much higher on the musicals list and is included more to nominally represent than anything else. :)

If you know me at all, you can probably guess which song I'm referring to (RVR loves it!).

I see DB and Tripe are using the same banner to promote the LoC this time around but I have no idea what movie that's referencing. Would either one of you be able to make up one or two others for promotion? Something that fits me. :D

I would, but Barnes might have access to the tools sooner than I would, but if not, I can whip something up tonight. :)
