Having discovered the means to time travel, the Time Lords took it upon themselves to safeguard time and protect the Earth.  Probably because they like playing favourites.  Eat it, Mars!

That was just The Doctor's deal. I believe the other Time Lords don't give a rip about Earth.

What about the Third Doctor.  They trap him on Earth and I don't think it's a coincidence when Earth is hammered with blow after blow of alien invasions.  Plus they warn him about the Master as if this is his mission.  Granted, they get away with that, but it's interesting that they do that to him.  Of course, maybe it's not that it's Earth so much as it is a chance for the Doctor to "redeem himself" in their eyes, a la Marvel Comics' Odin and Thor's relationship.  Odin was more interested in Thor's humbling than Earth's protection and then Odin and Thor get into arguments about Thor staying on Earth in a lot of the stories.

I don't know that much about the history, but I think they used to question The Doctor's fascination with the humans while they still existed. And in a Tenth Doctor finale,

This is just my opinion, but a species is not all that great if you can accidentally step on it and kill it.

Wouldn't that depend on how big you are?

Well, say about average human height. Anybody could easily step on the Mogwai and Gremlins... or the Hobbits for that matter.

That sounds like a pretty dodgy statement to make about anyone you don't know.

"HOW ARE YAAAA???"

20. Borg
(73 points, on 7 of 23 lists - Top Vote #9 by DB Barnes & Gunflyer)

...I think the Borg are more interesting when they completely lack individualism.  That's when they are scarier.

Absolutely. Just give me the no-nonsense, run-of-the-mill Borg. That shit was downright frightening.

11. Goblin
(97 points, on 5 of 23 lists - Top Vote #4 by Johnny Unusual & Tripe Hound Redux)

Goblins are awesome. It's funny, I used to think the Potter movies were good for nothing but riff fodder, but I've actually become a bit of a fan of them as the series has progressed. I even have a couple species exclusive to the Potter universe on my list. I always did like the Gringotts goblins.

7. Mogwai
(116 points, on 6 of 23 lists - Top Vote #1 by DB Barnes)

YES! Most adorable species EVER!!! And #7! Not too shabby a showing.

MOGWAI!!!

My list has made a little comeback with the top twenty so far. Things were starting to look bleak.

I know my #1 has to show up, but I now have a suspicion my #2 won't. Probably just because some people might not consider them a species.

While searching for a Christmas present for his teenage son, inventor Randall Peltzer (Hoyt Axton) discovers a small, furry creature called a Mogwai in an antique store in Chinatown.

That was Hoyt Axton?  I just saw Gremlins for the first time, and I could have SWORN that was Joe Don Baker.
