What, the four Daily Show gifs? Stewart's joke is that Sarah Palin says stupid things that sound like YouTube comments.

Why that needs to be in gif form instead of just video clip form is beyond me, but hey, that's the current internet culture. These kids today, and whatnot.

 I'm finding it very funny that a YouTube vs. animated gifs issue could be seen as a test for how old you are....

 Darn kids and their gifs, put it on YouTube dangnabit!

I'm pretty sure it's a tumblr thing. Even though tumblr supports videos, it's easier, when scrolling through your dash, to quick read a set of animated gifs as opposed to sitting and watching a video clip. You basically get the same information in a few seconds as opposed to watching a one to five minute clip, a lot of which is just people laughing at the joke.

In other words, yeah, Grug's right -- you guys are old.

The only benefit I see is that I can see the joke on my phone while I'm working.  I can't really watch videos while I work, but I can read sites and look at pictures while I'm standing around.  But if I had no idea who John Stewart was and didn't know exactly how he'd deliver his lines after having watched over a hundred hours of him speaking, then the joke would be lost on me.
