As an animation fan, I can tell you that sometimes looking at my DVD covers just makes me very, very sad. I mean, it's not like you're an animation company with access to hundreds of talented artists or anything. OH WAIT.

I know that feeling all too well.  Secret of NIMH is a horror story for cover art...
For example, here is the original poster/ DVD Cover art, which is awesome...

And here's the craptacular 'new' art that has graced the cover ever since its more recent DVD release...you know, to tie it into the sequel which everyone loves, right?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But the real reason I went to this thread is because these two graced my desk at work...and hoo, boy, did they drop the ball on them big time.  I mean...just...wow.

Yeah, those are indeed pretty awful. If you look at all of those, even the UK version of GMD that I posted, you notice something else that they all suffer from, and that is Massive Airbrush Syndrome. What genius decided that animated films needed a cover that look like you painted them on the side of a van? It is prevalent on nearly EVERY animated film cover, unless that film is CGI, in which case it's 50/50 whether you'll get a good one.

As an example of a really lovely animated film cover, allow me to present:

Just look at that. That's great. Why can't they all look like that?

That Fern Gully cover is still not as hideous and appalling as the movie itself.

I saw that last one on Blu Ray in Wal Mart the other day and I noticed that one the Blu-Ray case they airbrushed out the dog and the bat thing so it looks like a period piece that just happens to be animated.

Ye gods and little fishes. Though admittedly neither the dog nor the bat have anything much to do with the story.

Do they (Murtaugh and Riggs) even use dynamite as a weapon at any point in the movies? And way to make it look like a ripoff of the Mission Impossible movies, guys!

I don't think they do.  Plus it looks like one of those "50 action movies that are in the public domain so we can sell them for $5" dvd covers.

Maybe they only used "DYNAM" as the cover displays?

Wonder what that is?  Maybe they think people will buy the boxset just to find out.

As I said in the Blu Ray thread I do wonder if they have gone with this design just to keep Mel Gibson's face and name off of the art work.

Yes, because clearly it would be a good idea to not have Mel Gibson and his recent history associated with the Lethal Weapon franchise. I mean, a highly unstable individual who is constantly at odds with law enforcement and his own inner demons?  Why, that's not the face we want to put forward!   ;)

I am not saying it makes sense just that it may be what the studio is thinking.

Then put Danny Glover front and center, then.

This is hollywood we are talking about. Unless it is Will Smith,a movie about gangs,or a comedy with an all black cast they are never going to put a black man front and center on their artwork.
