With the economy becoming more and more of (to crib a line from "As We Like It") "a hopeless shambles", I find this short probably more meaningful in the 21st century than in the resplendent economy and decidedly non-thrifty ways of people in the time of its making.
How many families facing foreclosure could actually afford to regularly buy toys for their kids? They certainly do love tunnels...and boxes are damned cheap, often free...if the parents can afford the paint and pipe cleaners...
Of course, the kids would hide their box toys in shame lest the neighbour children give them the traditional cold shoulder for being poor...
