Cartoon All-Stars To The Rescue and the War On Drugs
« on: February 20, 2007, 12:54:18 PM »
Who here remembers this special?  I bring it up because it was mentioned recently on the Onion AV Club's website, in a slightly less-than-flattering manner.  (I don't remember which article it's in.)  And the AV Club's dismal opinion of the special, along with recent comments in my local newspaper's opinion section criticizing the grade school drug prevention program DARE (which I believe stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education or something similar) makes me wonder what people thought about the War On Drugs in general and the program Cartoon All-Stars To The Rescue specifically.  So, what do you think?

My most vivid memory of the special was Michaelangelo shaking his head in sad disapproval and saying, "Cowabunga, dude.."

  That was an AWESOME scene.

The only reason I even bothered to watch the special was because it was advertised as having TMNTs in it.

Oh it was a HUGE event if you were watching Saturday Morning Cartoons at the time. Smurfs alongside Garfield, alongside Ninja Turtles, alongside Ghostbusters (I think)... All the big names in one nifty special. :^)

I used to watch that cartoon special all the time as a kid. I think the person who wrote it was on drugs.

it would have been funny if garfield killed a couple of smurfs and left them on the rug as a present for john to find, or if the ghostbusters tried excise the turtles or something.

That's nearly exactly how it would have been if I had written it. Only the Turtles would have been the ones to kill the smurfs. It would have been awesome.

The Smurfs, also. Everyone could have ganged up on the Smurfs.

Smurfs are like that little critter in the Simpsons who was sexually attracted to fire. They're meant to be extinct.

Is that the special that was simul-cast on like 10 or 20 different channels at the same time?  At least, the first time it was on.   Did Nancy Reagan introduce it?
